I would say this fails the basic test of "helping backpackers have a good experience on a budget." Little helpful info on how to save money, such as staying at a Bahamian-run hotel off the beaten path (e.g., in the up-and-coming Golden Gates neighborhood), the current rate of a day-pass to Atlantis, or actually affordable places to eat. There was some useful information about historical sights, but Lonely Planet should really send another writer to visit for an update. Budget travel to the Bahamas is hard, but it's possible. Grabbing a meat patty for lunch, for example, is a great way to save. This guide actually *recommends* Graycliff, even though their food is pretty objectively poor value (you could get the same American meal in NYC for 30% less--just have some damn conch). I really got the impression that whomever visited here before really didn't like the Bahamas. It's no Thailand, but I spent under $1,000 including airfare and stayed for a week (in an unfinished hotel with friends), saw beautiful fish and amazing beaches, and ate the best Greek food I've had in my life. Lonely Planet needs to send someone who appreciates budget travel in the Bahamas for what it is.

I am a native of The Bahamas who bought the book to get an idea of how tourists would see the islands. That said, I am really enjoying being the owner of this book. The guide itself can use an update to reflect current prices and market. But other than that, it's interesting and I enjoy reading it! It also made me aware of quite a few things that I had not previously known.

Good book easy to read and helpful for planning your trip

Nice book. Informative and clear. Didn't have a ton of info on Andros, but that is probably because there is not much to write about! I got the info that I needed.

Information was interesting

Just what I needed with all details on the all the islands. Very helpful for my upcoming trip planning. Thank you!

I always choose Lonely planet as it had been accurate and helpful in my trips and to plan them beforehand.

This book tells a lot about all the islands. I'm going to island hop around the bahamas and feel this book is very informative

A great book about St. Therese and her family. I read from this bookoften and highly recommend it if you want to understand the backgroundthat contributed to her greatness.

What a blessed family...But they had blessed parents who gave to thechildren a mixture of love and Catholicism in liberal amounts. I can truly see why the five surviving girls entered the convent to become brides of Christ.

Wonderful book ;As a lover of this Saint I canAttest that anyone lookingto learn about her and herFamily will learn all youcould ever want.

Anyone wanting to know about the Martin family should read this book. It has a lot of information about their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone!

This book is an inspiration. The Martin family lives for each other in charity and self giving. No sacrifice is too big or small in their desire to please Our Lord and one another. If more families would follow their example of total self giving, we would have a much happier world. I was deeply touched by it and highly recommend it for anyone searching for real love and how to put your faith in practice in the most menial daily tasks.

This is the exact book for which I was looking to find.I had lent my copy and couldn't remember to whom. The copy for which I was looking had a different cover than the one shownand that is what I received. I'm so very grateful. I'm hoping to pass it on to eachfamily member to read. I think it's a very important book.

We are less than a week away from having two new saints in the Church - Louis and Zélie Martin! I have a family of friends who are so excited for their canonization, you'd think they were distant relatives of theirs. For those of you unfamiliar with these two future saints, they are the parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux as well as many other children including four nuns! They were truly a holy family and a model for us all, and I believe we should read more about them, so that we can emulate them. TAN Books is one of the best sources for books about the Martin family, and I'd like to tell you about a few of them today. The Story of a Family was published in the 1940s, reprinted in 1994 by TAN Books, and now has been reprinted again in 2015 in time for the canonization of Louis and Zélie Martin. The book is only fifteen chapters in length, but it is full of detail as it spans 400+ pages. The book begins by giving us a backstory of the two parents and their early years. We learn that Louis was a watchmaker and Zélie was a lacemaker. It was these two professions that led to their chance meeting. Both felt a call to the religious life, but chose to marry. Interestingly enough, after marriage, Louis Martin wanted to live a celibate married life, like Mary and Joseph, but Zélie had strong maternal instincts. We also learn about the children they had, the children they lost, and a great deal about Thérèse.Chapter 13 - 'The Offering of the Children" was my favorite chapter. In this chapter, we learn of the Martins deep desire to give birth a future priest. They lost two boys, and therefore their hope was lost after this. However, with each girl, they had dreams, which came true, of populating the cloister. "They were not of the number of those pusillanimous parents who dread sacrificing to God what they have no hesitation in handing over to a creature." It was surprising to me to read these words, not because they were so accepting and encouraging of religious vocations, but because even that far in the past, parents were still hesitant to embrace the idea of religious vocations for their children. May the Martins serve as an example for all of us with children!I have two final observations to leave you with regarding this book. First, the true treasure of this book is found in the images. We as Catholics have a lot of older saints who we see depicted in ancient artwork, but no real actual photographic evidence. Being able to see actual pictures of these recent saints, help demonstrate to us that they were humans just like us, and that we too can be saints if we follow their examples and say Yes to Jesus! Second, the age of the book is reflected in the writing style and language, but that doesn't mean that it is impossible to read. As a fan of classic literature, I personally enjoy that style, but it isn't for everyone. I for one am grateful that this book is back in print, and think it is a very good introduction to the Martin family. After reading this, I plan to read some more books about the Martin family, mainly The Father of the Little Flower, The Mother of the Little Flower, and My Sister Saint Thérèse. All of these were written by Sr. Genevieve of the Holy Face (Celine Martin), the sister of St. Thérèse and should provide a more personal and intimate look at the Martins.

I loved getting to know St. Therese better, as well as her family. It has been a wonderful inspiration. I cannot recommend this book enough! There were a couple things said by the family that I disagree with, but to each his own on these minor issues. I have only two complaints. The author was too descriptive of the setting at times for my liking. It was not a lot, and it probably isn't for the average person, I just have a low attention span at times. My bigger complaint though is that the author sometimes didn't end-quote, which made the reading briefly confusing. While this didn't happen a lot, it happened enough for me to mark it down (with my other complaint). That being said, I will be keeping this book for future reference, and possibly another read in the future, and will probably be buying it for family/friends this Christmas.

Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success, by Adam Grant

From Booklist

An academic, Grant explains that added to hard work, talent, and luck, highly successful people need the ability to connect with others. We learn givers give more than they get, takers get more than they give, and matchers aim to give and get equally; all can succeed. The author’s aim is to explain why we underestimate the success of givers, to explore what separates giver champs from chumps, and what is unique about giver success. Emphasis on teams and the rise of the service sector offers givers access to opportunities that takers and matchers often miss. In the first section, the author explains his principles of giver success, and, in the second part, with insightful stories he explores the costs of giving and how givers can protect themselves against burnout and becoming pushovers; helping others does not compromise success. Grant concludes with his hope that this book will provide his young daughters’ generation with a new perspective on success. A worthy goal for this excellent book. --Mary Whaley

Nice guys finish last.I have believed in this cliché my entire life. I could probably think of at least a dozen examples in my life where I saw a self-centered person hired, promoted, or in some way rewarded while I (or someone I know) is ignored, passed by, or even punished. In those moments, it can be completely debilitating. That’s why the “nice guys finish last” cliché is so powerful. It feels so true. However, there’s a difference between something feeling true and something being true.In Adam Grant’s Give and Take, he identifies three types of people: givers, matchers, and takers. Givers are the selfless ones. Matchers are the quid pro quo group, and takers are the selfish ones. Conventional wisdom tells us takers get ahead, but in Grant’s research, givers rise to the top more frequently. As I read this book I was kind of in disbelief the whole time, but page after page, Grant hit me with more evidence. I definitely think of myself as a giver (though I know I’m not perfect, I’m sure I have regretfully done some matching and taking in my life) and if you look at my life right now I don’t think anyone would identify me as losing. Perhaps then I am evidence that over time givers rise to the tops as takers are exposed and matchers ignored. This book is a case for giving: who gives, how to give, and where it takes us. There is one caveat to all this: it has to be authentic. Giving to get ahead is matching, not giving. People can see right through that.I feared this book would be a “cover spoiler” which I define as a book where the title or cover gives you all the information you really need and the entire book just repeats itself over and over again 200+ pages, but this book is full of wisdom and insights. I think this book is a great investment for leaders young and old. Here’s a great excerpt from the end of the book that wraps it up neatly: “We spend the majority of our waking hours at work. This means that what we do at work becomes a fundamental part of who we are. If we reserve giver values for our personal lives, what will be missing in our professional lives?”

“Givers”, “Takers”, and “Matchers” are three fundamental styles of interacting with others. “Takers” use other people solely for their own gain. “Givers” focus on acting in the interests of others, even when the benefits to others exceed the cost to themselves. “Matchers” operate on the principle of fairness by seeking reciprocity.Which one best describes you in business?Of course, in marriage and friendships, we contribute whenever we can without keeping score. We also shift from one style of behaviour to another, across different work roles and relationships. However, we all have a primary style and it has been shown to play as much of a role in our work success as hard work, talent, and luck.Which style of relating is most likely to end up at the bottom of the success ladder, and which style on top? Pause here for a moment and reflect on your personal experience.Research demonstrates that givers sink to the bottom of the success ladder - they make others better off, but sacrifice their own success. In a study of more than 160 engineers in California the least successful engineers were those who gave more than they received. A study of more than 600 medical students in Belgium, showed the lowest grades going to those described as givers. Salespeople were no different, with givers generating 2 ½ times less in annual sales.“On average, givers earn 14% less money, have twice the risk of becoming victims of crimes, and are judged as 22 % less powerful and dominant,” reports author Professor Adam Grant, the youngest full professor of the Wharton School of Business. If the givers are at the bottom of the success ladder, who then is at the top—takers or matchers? The data reveals a surprising pattern – the givers again! “This pattern holds up across the board,” Grant reports. “The top performers were givers, and they averaged 50 percent more annual revenue than the takers and matchers.” It was only at the start of medical school that givers underperformed. They increased their scores each year and by the sixth year, the givers earned substantially higher grades than their peers. When the givers became doctors, they climbed still further ahead. And this pattern holds true across occupations.David Hornik, a venture capitalist, is admired for his commitment to acting in the best interests of entrepreneurs. When he gives an entrepreneur a term sheet - a bullet-point document outlining the material terms and conditions of a business agreement - he also suggests that they shop around to ensure they get the best deal for themselves. Other investors, and if it is a promising deal there are always others, give entrepreneurs a tight deadline to respond to their offer in order to prevent shopping around. The best venture capitalists have an acceptance rate of nearly 50% of the term sheets they offer. In the 11 years as a venture capitalist, Hornik has offered 28 term sheets and twenty-five have accepted.“In this book, I want to persuade you that we underestimate the success of givers like David Hornik,” Grant asserts.Giving can be more powerful and less dangerous than most would believe. “Givers reverse the popular plan of succeeding first and giving back later, raising the possibility that those who give first are often best positioned for success later,” Adam explains. The venture capitalist Randy Komisar remarks, “It’s easier to win if everybody wants you to win… (If) you don’t make enemies out there, it’s easier to succeed.”Success is less about raw talent or aptitude, and more about the strategies givers use. Givers are not necessarily nice, and they’re not necessarily altruistic. In a purely win-lose interaction, giving rarely pays. Most of life is not win-lose. People who choose giving as their primary reciprocity style end up reaping rewards. One reason why givers take time to succeed, is that it takes time for givers to build goodwill and trust, and establish reputations and relationships that enhance their success.“Being a giver is not good for a 100-yard dash, but it’s valuable in a marathon,” says Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hotels. Today, speed is making the long-run shorter, and technology is amplifying the advantages of being a giver. In the past, most people worked in independent jobs that rarely required collaboration, so it was fairly inefficient to be a giver. Today, more than 80 percent of Americans work in service jobs where giving is not a choice, but a business necessity.Steve Jones, the former CEO of one of the largest banks in Australia, commissioned a study of successful financial advisers. It was not financial expertise or effort that made for success, it “was whether a financial adviser had the client’s best interests at heart, above the company’s and even his own.”All this needs to be calibrated by observation, that too many givers become pushovers and doormats, and fail to advance their own interests. What differentiates successful givers from failed givers is the degree to which the givers expressed two key motivations: self-interest and other-interest. Self-interest involves pursuing power and achievement, and other-interest focuses on being generous and helpful. This is well illustrated by a study of “Caring Canadian” award winners. The award is made by the Governor General of Canada to honour volunteers. In their life stories, these highly successful givers mentioned a quest for power and achievement almost twice as often as the comparison group. They also had roughly 20% more objectives related to gaining influence, earning recognition, and attaining individual excellence.Takers score high in self-interest and low in other-interest and selfless givers score high on other-interest and low on self-interest. Selfless giving is a form of pathological altruism, an unhealthy focus on others to the detriment of one’s own needs.“If takers are selfish and failed givers are selfless, successful givers are “otherish”: they care about benefiting others, but they also have ambitious goals for advancing their own interests,” Grant concludes.Much food for thought.Readability Light --+-- SeriousInsights High +---- LowPractical High --+--Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author ofStrategy that Works
