This is quick, incremental reading. As one would expect, some reasons are more persuasive than others. But some are very powerful indeed. There’s a great deal of information about The Earl of Oxford’s access to sources that the author of the Shakespeare plays would have had to know about. In the 16th century, that access was not something that could be taken for granted as it can now. He was positioned to know the things that Shakespeare had to know, as the man from Stratford very clearly was not.
A terrific compendium of topics relevant to the question of who wrote the works of Shakespeare. Whittemore provides innumerable reasons to imagine the unimaginable - that Shakespeare scholars and theatre artists have missed the boat for 400 years regarding the attribution of these marvelous poems and plays. Was Shakespeare a man of the theatre? Of course he was, and he also was, as Richard Dutton has claimed in 'Shakespeare, Court Dramatist' (OUP, 2016), the most revered court dramatist of his time. Reading between the lines becomes possible once Whittemore's arguments are digested. Bravo for this outstanding and radical exposé on why we should all be curious skeptics of literary orthodoxy as regards the origins of the Shakespeare canon.
Whittemore has presented the Oxfordian point of view in a very different and convincing format: a short, independent chapter on each of his 100 reasons. Many were new to me, concerned evidence from the plays themselves, and are important evidence. As the book's title states, he presents positive arguments for the Earl of Oxford being the author of the works traditionally attributed to the businessman, part theater owner, and bit player on the stage from Stratford upon Avon, not the equal number of reasons against the latter being the author.
One more excellent summary of why Will of Stratford didn't write the works of Shakespeare, and why the Earl of Oxford could well have. Of course, we're talking to only a small audience of people who are even willing to entertain the notion.
After having read a number of books addressing the authorship question over time, I found this reasoned presentation of the evidence, both old and new to me, exceptionally well organized and convincing. The reader can consider the findings behind each reason as well as observe how the evidence builds and fits together. Enjoyed revisiting the fascinating topic with this well done treatment.
Wow! This is a very impressive collection of the evidence for Oxford's authorship of the works attributed to "William Shake-speare," that even the experts cannot ignore. Mr. Whittemore writes with eloquence and neatly arranges his material in a readable format. Highly recommended.As the late Orson Welles said to an interviewer in the 1950s: "I think Oxford wrote Shakespeare. If you don't there an awful lot of funny coincidences to explain away."
This book is a stake in the heart that turns to dust the old fiction that Will Shakspere of Stratford wrote the works attributed to William Shake-speare.
It's a fascinating idea. I think I believe it now. It's rather too . . . detailed for me, but for those who like that it seems well researched. There's another book about the Earl himself that I'd like to read now.
