This is a comprehensive practical guide to building cloud-based applications. It is a must-have resource for anyone who is looking to utilize the cloud, especially for data processing. The book presents the topics with the right level of theoretical background, and—most importantly—with a detailed discussion of technical issues and best practices. The book is truly comprehensive. It covers all aspects of building an application in the cloud (e.g., data storage, VM management, data analysis, and even machine-learning libraries and frameworks). It also discusses the current cloud offerings by major cloud providers (e.g., Google, Amazon, and Microsoft) and even presents the steps for building one’s own cloud platform using Eucalyptus and OpenStack. The book includes screenshots, code snippets, and Jupyter notebooks that can be readily used to experiment with the presented topics! This is the definitive guide to cloud-based data processing. I congratulate the authors.

A very comprehensive book, perfect for the layperson to help understand the dynamics of cloud computing (it's genesis and evolution) while also providing practical tips on how to engage. The framework of the more strategic discussions allow one to paint a picture of where all this is headed considering the impact of how cloud computing will continue to change how we work and build new, technologically capable tools. The "how to" portions act as hands on experience labs, for those who want to start to dig in and start building. Highly recommended as a one source, rich reference to gain an understanding of how things will evolve and how to immediately engage.

In 1998 Ian Foster, and Carl Kesselman created the modern Grid Concept: “The Grid is an emerging infrastructure that will fundamentally change the way we think about-and use-computing. The word Grid is used by analogy with the electric power grid, which provides pervasive access to electricity and has had a dramatic impact on human capabilities and society.” The Grid 2, Second Edition: Blueprint for a New Computing Infrastructure (The Elsevier Series in Grid Computing)In 1998 the word Cloud for computer networks did not really exist yet.MIT Technology Review wrote that “many believe the first use of “cloud computing” in its modern context occurred on August 9, 2006, when then Google CEO Eric Schmidt introduced the term to an industry conference. “What’s interesting is that there is an emergent new model,” Schmidt said, “I don’t think people have really understood how big this opportunity really is. It starts with the premise that the data services and architecture should be on servers. We call it cloud computing—they should be in a “cloud” somewhere.”It seems the original Grid book was nothing but a stepping stone to the Cloud. The book we review here, Cloud Computing for Science and Engineering (Scientific and Engineering Computation), is the evolution from Grid to Cloud with plenty of practical advice for science and engineering. Ian Foster and Dennis Gannon are the authors. This book is unlike other titles on cloud computing.Ian Foster is a great communicator who knows how to stir our dreams. He quotes in the preface; "Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them” attributed to Alfred North Whitehead, the British mathematician. The operation of the cloud should become a habit, easy to aquireThe Jazz age in 1920's made people jumping from the concert halls and start dancing as anew social manner. It made the entire music and entertainment industry look as today. By moving outsides the confines of a data centers, clouds are by definition social and life-changing. They create fun and make possible things never possible beforeChapter 4 "Computing as a Service" is an absolute gemThe Machine Learning (Chapter 10) will become relevant in science and engineering clouds, but for now, deep learning is not widely usedI have heard two trends in the continuous evolution of the cloud:- "Big Data" term will disappear as Artificial Intelligence takes over- Cloud services will move to the edge.See " Realm Receives Investment from Ericsson Ventures to Advance Development of Edge Computing Solutions."The book is meant to avoid obsolescence as the online version allows contributors to blog new relevant information, The book breathes alive.Below is a high-level picture of the content. Most chapters are easy to read, some chapters are used in High Performance Computing only.Part I. Managing data in the cloudPart II. Computing in the cloudPart III. The cloud as platformPart IV. Building your own cloudPart V. SecuritySpace is too tight to talk in detail about the content. virtual computers, containers are explained clearly in the cloud context. As detail, we learn of very wide storage systems that can update 170 GB over the entire planet in less than 7 minutes

This is an excellent book on cloud computing. Very helpful reference with detailed description of a number of existing cloud services. I especially like the examples for each part. The book is well worded and easy to follow. I will definitely use it in the future.

This is an excellent book and a factual guide to cloud computing as it exists today. If you want to read a bunch of fantasy stuff about how the cloud solves all our problems, this is not the book for you. If you want real, accurate, detailed information about cloud technology that will let you understand and use cloud resources in your science and engineering research this IS the book you want. It is the very best practical book about cloud usage for science that covers multiple cloud systems - including multiple commercial offerings and the NSF-funded Jetstream system which is available for use by US researchers at institutions of higher education (see xsede.org if you want to try Jetstream after reading this book). Don't bother with dummies guides or vendor-written docs. Get the real scoop on clouds for science and engineering here
