Social Security Works! is the most important book that any policy maker, voter, or simply concerned citizen can read in preparation for November 2016. Authors Nancy Altman and Eric Kingson are the most vigorous proponents of America’s vital system of Social Security. Equally important, their knowledge of the system and their understanding of the politics affecting it are unexcelled. They are the perfect authors for this essential study--and I say this as a scholar of Social Security myself, and as the author of four books on the topic.Altman and Kingson demonstrate clearly that Social Security is not “broken,” nor is it “unsustainable.” They explain why such misconceptions are now common. They identify the ideologues and selfish interests who have made error and untruth the conventional wisdom, and why and how they have done so.This stimulating new book confronts the propaganda directly, and makes it plain that Social Security is strong. Certainly, Social Security does, indeed, work. There is no reason to cut benefits—for anyone. Moreover, as these brilliant authors prove beyond any reasonable doubt, Social Security will work even better if it is substantially expanded.

I had bought this a number of months ago but just read it. This book is a total eye-opener!! I didn't realize how much I DIDN'T know about Social Security, how it works, how it's funded, etc. I also believed some of the myths about it's going broke and needing to be fixed by lowering benefits. The distinction between it being wage INSURANCE versus being some welfare program is important -- and I do now hate the term "entitlement"! But the biggest shock was reading about the 30-year long effort that rich cats (and their rich offspring) have been waging to slander and destroy the program, and how close they recently came to getting their way! It is beyond me to understand how people who are so fortunate in being well-off can be so uncaring and intent on stealing the subsistence-level support that many elderly and disabled depend on! We need to spread the truth of what is happening and why. Wake up before it's too late!

Whether you’re 18 or 80 – or anywhere in between, or if you share responsibility for someone younger or older – Social Security is your best (and maybe your only) safety net. Social Security is more reliable than savings, safer than the stock market, and provides more accessible coverage than private disability insurance. The authors provide a ton of information about how Social Security works – and about ongoing attempts to undermine Social Security’s future. They dispel falsehoods and myths. And they identify reasons why some people would like to see this crucial system weakened or banished – and the methods & strategies they employ. They also provide specific steps we could take to make Social Security even stronger. If you believe that “we’re all in this together”, read Social Security Works!

An excellent, straight-forward explanation of the importance of and the financial strength of the SS program. A great insight into the stealth war being waged on the program by wealth elites with an agenda to advance. A must read for everybody who is not a gazillionaire and who hopes to retire at some point with dignity and a modest bit of income.

This book clarifies everything about Social Security. As a retiree who is dependent on Social Security benefits I worry that my benefits may be cut and that future generations will not have Social Security at all. The Republicans in Congress keep trying to do away with Social Security and they use scare tactics to make us believe that Social Security is not sustainable. We need to stop the Republicans from destroying this safety net that we all pay into.

This book should be read by anyone wanting to know more about how the Social Security system really works and why it is such a great and efficient program at helping the financial picture of all Americans...especially during rough economic times. Makes an outstanding case for why the program should be expanded and how minor changes can be made to ensure its financial stability indefinitely. Privatizing SS is a terrible idea (Wall Street and the politicians who have been bought by Wall Street love the privatization plan...big surprise!) and cutting the program is completely unnecessary! This book outlines the way forward and our elected leaders should take notice.

This book provides the specific details and numerical values for virtually all of the many features of Social Security, thereby clarifying the subjects that politicians have been discussing regarding the value or lack thereof of this retirement benefit which is payed for by working people during their working years so that they might have a minimal monetary income after their working years. These specific details are mainly left out of the discussions by detracting politicians who seem to want to place the monetary future of retirees into the plans of private companies which may or may not succeed, thereby potentially making the economic futures of retirees as uncertain as the capabilities of hired professionals to predict the directions of stocks and bonds in the public markets. The authors have provided the critical evidence, for us non-professionals,that supports confidence in the future of social security in its current form. It certainly gave me the attitude that makes me want to permit social security to continue unaltered in its present course and form.

Dr. McGee's commentaries are written in a language that anybody can understand. He does not fill them with theological terms and phrases that many laymen do not fully understand or comprehend - he gets right down to application for everyday living and how the events, prophecies, etc. in God's Word correspond with the world in which we live today. Our library contains several sets of commentaries, all of which are good in their own way, but Dr. McGee's are easily understood and presented. Even on those few occasions when Dr. McGee and I may differ in our doctrinal beliefs, God is faithful to help me interpret and grasp His Word as I "work out my own salvation."

This series is a good reference when leading a Sunday school class. We used this reference when studying the Book of Jonah.

This is a transcript of J.V.M.'s radio broadcasts, so it reads like he is speaking to an audience. Excellent material.

I have reviewed this series several times. See my other reviews! I suggest if you have a Kindel that you buy the "The Thru the Bible Commentary" and save yourself money. Once you read one, you will want them all!!

If you love the Holy Bible and want to study it in depth, yet appreciate common, understandable English, this is for you. It is not Cliff Notes style. It is a thorough study of the subject presented by the man I consider to be one of the greatest Bible teachers of all time.

Best commentary out there! You will enjoy adding this to your bible study!

love it

Review

Otto Lang Noted Filmmaker, author of "Around The World in 90 Years, " and prewar Sun Valley Ski School director Reading Peter Shelton's book "Climb to Conquer" is a revelation. Shelton, with his lucid, informative, and entertaining style of writing, vividly brings back the memory of many of the 10th Mountain participants. It's a minutely researched and well-documented piece of work, worthy of one's while to read, with ample rewards.Dick Bass Co-Author of "Seven Summits" and developer of Snowbird Ski Resort Thank goodness the story of the 10th Mountain Division is finally being told. I've had the distinct privilege and benefit of knowing and learning from a number of those described and quoted within these pages, and "Climb to Conquer" brings their extraordinary achievements to life, showing how their battlefield qualities of courage, perseverance, and resourcefulness also served them well as they became the backbone of the post-World War II evolution of American skiing and outdoor recreation. Peter Shelton tells their story so vividly, poignantly, and inspiringly that I couldn't put it down.David Breashears Author of "High Exposure, " Expedition Leader and co-director of the Imax film "Everest" Peter Shelton's "Climb to Conquer" is the story of the birth of American mountain adventure as we know it, brought together with riveting, little-known World War II history. Shelton puts us right alongside these endearing young mountain men as they learn to ski, climb, and survive in a bitterly cold and hostile environment. Their story will have you grinning one moment and gripping your chair the next, as they engage in mischief-making adventures, or ultimately climb a sheer cliff into enemy territory in the dead of night. It's a fantastic story, superbly told, and I highly recommend it.Russell Martin Author of "Beethoven's Hair" and "Picasso's War" The story of the army's 10th Mountain Division -- the ski troops -- and the decisive role it played in driving the Nazis from Italy is one of the most fascinating sagas of World War II. Peter Shelton, who writes as beautifully as he skis, tells it wonderfully. "Climb to Conquer" is a book about young men, now grown old, who have much to teach us about the immense importance of friendship, the collective nature of courage, and the transcendent gift of high mountains.

Review of "Climb to Conquer", "The Last Ridge" and "Fire on the Mountain (film)". Amazing story of skiers and mountaineers and how they came together to lead some of the final battles of WW II in Italy. Their post WW II experiences however are almost more amazing as so many of the leaders of the 10th Mt Division evolved into creating the downhill ski industry in North America, mountaineering, environmental advocacy, and training in outdoor skills. The father of one of my fellow graduate students years ago was in the 10th Mt Division and I remember stories he told me of his Dad's founding role in a ski area in New Hampshire. I felt a strong connection to the men of the 10th Mt Division as I personally became involved in the post WW II evolution of skiing, mountaineering, backpacking and outdoor adventures in the early 1960s and 1970s. Activities I continue to this day as I enter my seventh decade.Highly recommend this book and the 1995 documentary about the 10th Mt Division.

I read this superb book on loan from my daughter's boyfriend who fought with the 10th Mtn Div in both Iraq and Afghanistan in the recent past. I was mesmerized by learning the early beginnings of this distinguished Army Division. I am thankful we had so many terrific skiers in America, and our WWII allies countries, that formed the backbone of this dynamic unit that was the Tip of the Spear for the Allied Forces breaching the Axis" Winter Line " in Italy during the 1943-1944 Winter campaign. They were the first unit to reach and cross the Po River thus cutting off the German retreat. A Must Read for those who like to read about American ingenuity at it's finest. If you like a true picture off WWII history in the Southern Europe Theater of Operations, this is it. Look no further.

Climb To Conquer: The Untold Story of World War II's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops is an engaging story of one the US Army's most specialized organizations of WWII. Outdoor and skiing enthusiast Peter Shelton has done the men of the 10th Mountain Division justice with Climb To Conquer. Unlike the more recent, Boys of Winter by Charles J. Sanders, Shelton's book is a solid piece of historical literature.Climb to Conquer is divided into four basic topical sections:1) The Prologue and first seven chapters (with the exception of chapter 5) are dedicated to telling the story of how the "US Ski Troops" were conceived, formed and trained. Shelton thankfully opts not to present Climb To Conquer with the who's-who of skiing approach that Sander's took with his book. Instead Shelton gives background information about the genesis of the ski troops (initial Army outfit being the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment) and its most vocal and active proponents (C. Minot "Minnie" Dole and no less than Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall) within a context of the pre- and post-Pearl Harbor US military without cluttering it with unnecessary name dropping and ski-laden references.2) The second section, which can be seen as being comprised of Chapters 5 and 8-13, is the "battle meat" of the book. While Chapter 5 sits physically in the middle of the first topical section of the book it in fact tells the story of the first armed actions of the 87th Mountain Regiment on Kiska - one of the Aleutian Islands. This is a fascinating story told well by Shelton. Charged with driving Japanese defenders from the Island, the 87th spilled its first blood on Kiska. Unfortunately Kiska represents a tragedy in the history of the 10th Mountain Division since the casualties sustained were not the result of Japanese defenders (who had vacated the island weeks earlier in a stealthy escape through a US Navy blockade worthy of its own retelling) but rather from friendly fire of fellow 87th soldiers. Confusion and chaos reigned on Kiska and none of the survivors forgot their terrible experiences.Chapters 8-13 detail the exploits of the 10th Mountain Division as it entered the ETO in late 1944. Shelton does a good job describing the actions of the 10th (and other units of the US Fifth Army under Maj. Gen. Mark Clark) in the Italian Appennine Mountains, through to the Po River Valley, and the final race with the Wehrmacht to their supposed Alpine Redoubt in the Austrian Alps. Shelton's prose in the "battle chapters" is such that it holds the readers attention and draws then along with the story. Very well written from a pure reading standpoint.3) The third section of the book is represented by a single chapter (14) and details the time men of the 10th spent in the European mountains after their fighting was over. While there is not a lot of text associated with this section it provides an interesting tie-in to the final section of the book.4) The fourth and final section (Chapters 15 and 16) of the book describes the exploits and accomplishments of the veterans of the 10th at home after the war. Again Climb To Conquer, unlike The Boys of Winter, does a good job detailing how men of the 10th were instrumental in the establishment of the US ski industry. As was the case with his discussion of the formation and training of the mountain troops, Shelton places this final section within the larger context of how these things came to pass in many ways because of the training and combat experiences of the 10th veterans. Sanders failed to do this with The Boys of Winter. Moreover, Shelton doesn't limit his post-war accolades of the 10th Vets to their influence on the ski industry but rather makes a strong point of the critical importance of their work on environmental and conservation issues. These were mountain-men who had seen the devastation of man in war and vowed to protect nature's beauties. This final section provides the most unique sub-story to the history of the 10th Mountain Division.Concluding remarks: While the sub-title (The Untold Story of World War II's 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops) of Climb To Conquer is misleading - this is certainly not an untold story as many books about the 10th have proceeded Shelton's book, Peter Shelton has crafted a sound piece of unit history that also represents a noteworthy human story. Climb To Conquer is an easy-to-read, hard to put down and a solid 4 stars.

I read this book some time ago. I will acknowledge that I even know some of the characters portrayed in this book due to my life-long involvement in the ski industry. But that takes away nothing from the intensity of the undertaking these young Americans encountered during World War II. The intensely personal accounts from several of the players--not just amongst themselves, but in later years' contact with some of the "enemy" makes for very emotional reading. A well-written and told story that certainly brings home the absurdity of fighting wars.

I was expecting more on what the division accomplished and fought in a military history sense. More on the memories and biographies of those who were in the division.

A part of WW 2 I had very little knowledge of. So glad i read it. Well done.

Loved this book as well as World War II at Camp Hale.

Awesome guys. Glad to see their fight documented

This book is terrible. Where do I start? This is basically a book of a woman complaining "woe is me", throwing herself a pity party. She blames everyone else for her problems and doesn't accept any responsibility for her terrible decisions. First of all, this book promised what it didn't deliver. From the Amazon description: "Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them." Nope. There is no glimpse at "upper-middle" class other than her judging her clients for being "sad" or "smoking cigarettes" when she smokes herself.Secondly, she doesn't provide a look into the poverty in America. She doesn't recognize herself coming from a place of privilege as a white, American woman. She was afforded opportunities that other marginalized groups may not have received. She describes some of her greatest "sacrifices" as being her daughter not being able to get "organic" milk on the WIC program and her daughter's only "organic" foods were Annie's macaroni and cheese. Really? There are many, many, many Americans that can barely afford groceries and would be thankful to have any milk or food for the week, much less being choosy about ensuring it was "organic". She seems to lament that she can't be a "stay at home mom" which the majority of Americans can't afford. The "stay at home mom" role is something that very few can afford. That isn't a mark of "poverty". Many families have both parents who work, that isn't something "special" or sympathy inducing. Then there is the accident in which she pulled off on the median of a highway and leaves her daughter in the car seat while she walks along the highway looking for a $5 doll. Then she refuses to accept any blame or her role in the accident. She complains about not getting paid to drive to the jobs she works....um....do any of us get paid for our commute? She then gets $4,000 back in a tax refund, which is annoying within itself, but then instead of saving the money and building her future, she buys herself a diamond ring? What?? Her daughter is suffering health consequences from black mold, yet she doesn't nothing about that...no, instead, she wants diamonds. She is so full of self-pity the book is hard to read. One of the most important components of a book is to have a likable main character in which the reader can sympathize with and roots for their success. I tried, but I couldn't make myself root for her. I can't believe this book made its way through an agent, editor and publishing house and became a featured book on Amazon. Did any of them read this first? Super disappointing.

Giving this any sort of bad review almost seems like it would be an act of spite, given the circumstances Stephanie Land is writing from - but still, for the first third of the book I really wasn't liking it, and I couldn't put my finger on why.But at about the halfway point, I realized I had been bait-and-switched - this is not a story of a "maid." It's the story of a working, poor, single mother, dealing with a variety of problems both self-inflicted and beyond her control who *happens* to be a maid. But that's a harder elevator pitch so I understood why "maid" became the focus. But I don't think that's really the book. When I changed my focus to the book I realized it actually was I appreciated it a lot more. At that point, I could look at this as a window to this life. Yes, Stephanie Land is often self-pitying and finds confrontation and judgement around every corner - but of course she would. Her relations with her daughter's father is not good, and she's unable to find a really solid boyfriend, because of course she can't. She wishes for a better life and probably misprioritizes things in the moment instead of thinking long-term, because of course she would. That's the hustle and grind of this life - everything is working against her. I don't believe that in every checkout line she went through she got a hard time from people standing behind her, or the checkout person - but I do believe that it felt that way to her. I don't necessarily think she was exploited by her employers quite as badly as she describes - but I'm sure she felt she was. When you're in this situation, everything is exaggerated and every bit of bad luck is magnified. That's an interesting book - harsh and hard - but interesting. Reading it in that lens made it successful in a different way then the title that had originally misdirected me.I had to go on unemployment once (well, I didn't have too - I was laid off, and it was my right), and it's like going into another mirror universe - society's respect you took for granted is suddenly upended. You're no longer seen as a responsible member of society who can be trusted to be self-reliant. You're a liar, a rube, a sap who can't write a resume. Everything becomes lowest common denominator - the assumption is you're a grifter who's trying to get one over, or an idiot who has to be talked too like a child. I could see very easily how someone in that situation long-term could quickly stop caring about honesty or integrity because the people on the other side assume the worst. I hated it, hated myself, and it was only six weeks. So *of course* Stephanie Land is defensive and self-pitying at times, because society is expecting her to be. That's the role the working poor play - we feel bad for them, toss them some baseball tickets now and then, and make sure they know we're better than they are. When I read her book THAT way, it all came into focus. This is not a book about a maid - it's the book about a life when the only job you can find is being a maid. In that way, it is valuable - because somebody needs to tell that story, and the only way to tell it is if you live it. Even Barbara Ehrenreich's famous "Nickel and Dimed" was sort of a grift - she just pretended for awhile. Great writing, but an act. Stephanie Land isn't acting, so the occasional self-pity and various poor decisions are all part of that real life. It's not that poor people have especially bad luck, it's that they can't easily recover from even sort of bad luck.So - don't look at the title and think it's a book about maids. Think of it as a look into the world of the working poor that most of us look past and hope we never encounter in our own lives. Nobody wants to hold up a line to deal with food stamps, and all the clowns who say "you're welcome" and act like food stamps are being lifted out of their own pockets, should hope and pray the situation never reverses. To digress on the subjects of maids. I was in a big hotel in Mobile, Alabama once and I was getting ice from the bucket or whatever I was doing, and I walked by the maid's station and the group was in a conference. It was probably a dozen African-American women doing their meeting before the day's shift - most of them were young in typical maid uniforms, but there were two older women in business casual leading the meeting. I realized (or at least assumed) that these two women had probably been on staff for years, working up through those ranks. This was their kingdom; I had to think, back in their neighborhoods, they controlled everything - who could get a job at this nice hotel, where it probably was a good place to work, taking calls from mothers trying to get their daughters that opportunity, no doubt laying down the false compliments amid the desperation. How would they choose? I thought of all the compromises they had to make to get to that level of responsibility - all the customers they had to put up with, the managers who probably disrespected them, the owners who looked past them, all to get to this morning meeting. I want to read that book.So I left a very good tip in the room when I left, for some woman I never saw. I think I did. I've told myself I did. I'm a nice guy so I'm sure I did. All white, middle-class Americans are very nice. We're happy to give you $10 tips and free baseball tickets. Just don't hold us up in the checkout line with your food stamps and your crying kid.

This just rubbed me the wrong way. I do think that it is of the greatest importance for people to learn more about what it is like to live in poverty and how one gets there. Happily, there are many excellent books that are relevant here: $2 a Day, Evicted, Both Hands Tied, and Ehrenreich’s book come quickly to mind. There are also a very, very good five-part podcast on poverty (co-produced by On the Media and some one else, probably in 2016), and a couple of sympathetic and illuminating books about payday lenders.I have read all of those books (and quite a few others), and would recommend any of them rather than Maid. Maid is not a terrible book. But neither is it a good one. I was often frustrated by what certainly seemed like obtuseness or lack of insight on the part of this author.

Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry

From Publishers Weekly

An enthusiast for his subject, Nasmyth discovers Georgia precisely at the moment of the tiny democratic republic's post-Soviet reawakening. Notable for its hospitality, its wines, its intellectual tradition and a remarkable ability to preserve its national identity under successive occupations, Georgia appeals wildly to the senses even while its people face immense political and economic challenges. Nasmyth shows how this early Christian kingdom, once nestled between the Russian, Turkish and Persian empires, casts a spell over all those who visit. As he portrays Georgia's regions with descriptions of landscape and customs, Nasmyth also refers to a rich tradition of epic and religious writing and storytelling. While the interviews with people he encounters capture a portrait of Georgia in transition, there is a disappointing reliance on obvious metaphors to reflect the death of the Soviet order: rust, rickety buses, decrepit buildings and prostitution. Likewise, Nasmyth's digressions into the meaning of Soviet history and his occasional personal revelations are superficial and distract from an otherwise strong exercise in observation. Certain reminiscences are rewarding, however: wandering the twisting streets of Tbilisi, or imbibing a cold drink from a sacred pool in ancient cave dwellings. The author's occasional failure to provide profound commentary makes Georgia no less attractive as a destination. 170 b&w photos and illustrations. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

"All voyages are searches in disguise," says Nasmyth as he opens this disquisition on his travels through the former Soviet republic of GeorgiaAand at first readers may find this too annoyingly true. Nasmyth concedes that he's partly searching for himself here, and we hear rather too much about him as he weaves together impressions from his travels with the history of the country. But at least he's honest enough to admit it, and readers will learn a lot about Georgia from reading his book, though it's not really a comprehensive cultural and historical introduction, as it's billed. Rather, it is one slightly pushy but still pretty keen-eyed reporter's account of how the country opened up to him, with a somewhat stronger (and certainly welcome) focus on the arts than one typically finds in books of this sort. Nasmyth has been reporting on the Caucasus for 11 years (he currently runs a charity for children in the area), and though more of this material dates from early in his travels than one might like, he does vividly show us a society in flux. Recommended where Soviet/Russian studies, cultural studies, and unusual travelogs are popular.ABarbara Hoffert, "Library Journal"Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#2,363,379 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just returned from my first trip to the Republic of Georgia. I say "first" because my wife and I both fell in love with the place and we are already planning our return.I read Peter Nasmyth's book shortly before travelling to Georgia, and I found it an excellent preparation. Nasmyth's book is largely a report of his own travels in Georgia, first shortly before independence, then just after the brief civil war and also more recently. It doesn't give as much historical and descriptive material as a standard travel book would, and the photos (which Nasmyth took himself) are in black and white. What comes across most vividly, however, is the Georgian people, and this is as it should be, since, although Georgia has an abundance of natural and historical beauty, it is the people that one falls in love with.Lancelot Fletcher lrf@jag.gePS. My wife and I returned and are now living in Georgia. Peter Nasmyth's book is still, in my opinion, the best introduction to Georgia, even though the country has changed tremendously since the book was published. Too bad it's so expensive.

This is not a travel book. This is, however, an excellent introduction to the country Georgia. As a grad student preparing to write on Georgia, this was a great starting place. You will get a real feel for the country and the recent issues of current events there.Mr. Nasmyth has been blessed with an extraordinary ability to filter through what he's seeing (even drunk!) and spot the trends in a foreign country.
