Inventor Taylor Wilson, now 22, actually made a “star” in a home garage at age 14, as a carefully controlled nuclear fusion reaction. His experiment could ultimately lead to a prototype that utilities could use to generate clean power.Wilson invited an outside writer to tell his story, rather than relating it himself. But Wilson writes very detailed technical prose on how own website (“sciradioative”). As a teenager, he showed amazing grasp of physics that is beyond most graduate students. You wonder if he is proof of reincarnation.Wilson also has ideas that would be very mission-critical for Homeland Security, ranging from less expensive detection devices at ports and airports, to providing small underground fission reactors to local utilities so that power becomes more decentralized and less vulnerable to possible terror attacks or even solar storms.Wilson has benefited from a fellowship by libertarian activist (and, oddly, Trump supporter) Peter Thiel, who pays entrepreneurs to drop out of college and work on their inventions. Wilson also attended the Davidson Academy, in Reno NV, for the profoundly gifted. His family moved from Arkansas.The book has many color illustrations and is quite professionally written and edited.

A true, well-written, story about a schoolkid who grew increasingly fascinated about nuclear science after spending much of his childhood experimenting with chemicals in a makeshift lab in his grandmother's garage. The author does a suburb job describing Taylor's early childhood and the various escapades that led to an eventual interest in building a fusion reactor. This is a most amazing story that the author narrates with perspectives from professionals on how a gifted child can develop on his/her own and make a tremendous contribution to the world. He states early that he started the book as a biography, but once he understood the dangers posed by Taylor's work with both chemicals (including rockets) and then highly radioactive materials, he poses the question "Where were his parents and why did they allow this?" Exactly, and the answer comes steadily, and clearly, throughout the book. It is an inspirational read, and full of useful science. But it will be remembered as much for the author's (Tom Clynes) analysis of how a child could become as gifted and productive as Taylor. That is the reason for the second portion of the title: "Extreme Parenting and How to Make a Star." The pace of the book is fast since Clynes fills it with humor, such as the time his parents took him to a space museum (middle school age) and his pronouncements to the tour group of many facts and figures of, for example, the Saturn rocket's thrust, speed, flight principles and fuel chemistry caused them to back away and the docent leading the group to bring the head of the operation to see Taylor. A thoroughly enjoyable book.

I found this book fascinating. "The boy" is so full of life and energy he nearly jumps off the page. And his story, told with enthusiasm and work-man-like zeal, is simply fascinating. I actually found the sections on the state of gifted education in this country and the chance for kids who are as talented and smart and hard-working and creative as Taylor to be given sufficient opportunities to advance, to be really interesting, especially in terms of the future of this country in the fields of science, technology, medicine, and the like. I worry about this amazing kid and wish him well as he navigates himself into the rest of his life. He's no longer a "child prodigy" and that can be a real shock. I hope he can hold on to his belief that anything is possible, his "never say no" attitude, his immense creativity and curiosity. I don't want him to get "so big for this britches" as my mother would say, that he antagonizes people who can help him and forgets the virtues of charm and collaboration.

This is a wonderful story about parents who are willing to do anything to support their son's passion of (and talent for) physics.Tom Clynes knows his math, science, and engineering, and he did a great job of introducing concepts into the book that would have been tough to explain by a less qualified author.I loved the conversational nature of the book.Brilliant!

Very interesting and well written. Not just a story about a kid playing with fusion, one of the real strengths of the book was the discussion of how to raise a kid that wants to play with fusion. It was a wonderful amalgam of biography about a gifted boy, a history of nuclear physics, and a parenting guide all in one, which may seem daunting, but the author makes it work, and work well! My only complaint is that the books ends, but short of Taylor inventing a time machine, it look like we're just going to have to wait and see what is next.

Fascinating story not only for the lessons in parenting where both parents gave in to most of a child wild dreams, he succeeds. Also the down side where a lack of maturity often is part of getting everything you want at such a young age when a young brilliant mind is not matured. Very interesting

"The peculiar grace of a Shaker chair is due to the fact that it was made by someone capable of believing that an angel might come and sit on it," wrote Thomas Merton in 1964, at the height of his interest in the Shakers and their spiritual arts. Merton never completed his planned book on the Shakers, but he did write two brief essays and several letters on the subject, and he spoke to his fellow Cistercian monks about what they could learn from the Shakers' quasi-monastic approach to faith and work. All of these brief reflections are included in this simple, meditative compilation on Merton and the Shakers. Merton admired the Shakers' simplicity, and the fact that their furniture, crafts and music flowed freely from a pure and holy devotion to God. Shaker creativity, he claimed, extended from a "perfect fusion of temporal and eternal values, of spirit and matter." Separated by just 45 miles and both settled into Kentucky in around the same time period (1806), there are some similarities. This book contains an introduction by Editor Paul Pearson, who points out two similarities of Merton and Shaker’s view:i. Embrace of monasticism (because the Shakers could be viewed such). Is not he Rule of St. Benedict welcoming of strangers similar to Shakers?ii. Merton’s vision of paradise consciousness “original blessing” on the earth.Merton is also attracted to the ‘wonderful integration of spiritual and physical” in their work (and that is emphasized by the Rule).The book includes 3 short essays of Merton, and then a few selected Merton correspondences. The view of paradise on earth perhaps challenging, and did the Shakers really feel “they had been completely regenerated and were living the perfect risen life in and with Christ”. One of my favorite Merton statements in the book is that “the peculiar grace of a Shaker chair is due to the fact that it was made by someone capable of believing that an angel might come and sit on it”. So the challenge for me, is how to take that attitude for my own work, can I make a map that an angel may use? “The form had to be an expression of spiritual force”. The second essay is an introduction to the book “Religion in Wood” by Deming Andrews, and looks at the work of William Blake to better understand the Shaker material.The photos by both Merton and Pearson greatly enhance the book.

A fine book for a 10 year old girl to read and glean the full story of Anne Franke. Lightly edited to trim out the parts that are a bit gruesome or touchy for a child to understand.

I came upon this book at a used bookstore and immediately snapped it up! I love Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl and for the last two decades have been collecting any book that I can find about Anne's writing, her life, and the Holocaust. This book provides some insights into Anne Frank's life, but it's more suited for young readers ages 7-12.There are some illustrations throughout the book by artist Vera Rosenberry. This should prove interesting to young children who like visuals to go along with the text. The author, Johanna Hurwitz has written in a style that makes this biography easily accessible to young readers and the book itself only numbers about 53 pages in length with some additional pages covering important dates, the author's note, and an index.The book provides some brief facts about Anne's life with her family prior to the Second World War, but the majority of the biography focuses on Anne's life whilst in hiding, and explores her feelings at being cooped up in a constricted space with the other Jews and her yearnings for the open space and a chance to life a normal life and realize her dreams. It also briefly covers the period after the group's arrest and how Anne and her family are first sent to Westerbork, a transit camp before being sent to Auschwitz and finally, Anne and Margot's transport to Bergen-Belsen, where both sisters died before liberation. The significance of Anne's diary is also covered here. In all, this makes a good introduction to Anne for elementary school children.

This is another book about Anne Frank that I get the chance to read. Although there are many biographies about this wonderful human being, this book is the closest one that can answer the questions that all Anne Frank fan has. I did for many years just read the Diary over and over but I wanted more! This book is definetly more! It tells you more about the relationship she had with her family and the rest of the people in hiding. This is a girl who could hardly see the light coming from her window and the only green thing that she could think about was a huge chestnut outside the Annex. This book describes this little things that she cherished and that she no longer had....her freedom. She didn't either had freedom of speach inside the Annex due to the critics about her attitude. This book develops more information about why Anne acted like she did and why she had an open opinion about everything. It also gives you a bigger idea of why she didn't like her mother and develops more about her childhood around her family and her friends. I hope all readers that enjoy the Anne Frank writings will enjoy this description about her persona. Is a total different thing to read her diary knowing more about her life and early aspirations. ENJOY!

This book is filled with the ups and downs of Anne Frank, how she handles her problems, how life was being Jewish and happy memories of her life. It tells how Anne was a very energetic girl who had fun with friends and was very social. However, it also describes how hard life was for her, being Jewish, going into hiding and being captured and being transported to different concentration camps. Anne was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt Germany. During her time in hiding she kept all her secret thoughts in a diary that her mother and father (Edith and Otto Frank) gave to her the day she turned 13(June 12, 1942). Anne had a very strong bond with her father and sister (Margot) but not as strong with her mother but she still loved her dearly. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested about Anne Frank.

A little disappointed. I thought it would be a larger book. It can easily be read within an hour.

I love love Lauren Oliver and the Replica series is so unique and interesting. They are like 500 pages but I devour them. Ringer is just as fast paced as Replica. I love the two different stories. I always read Gemma first, and her story is always my favorite. I do enjoy Lyra’s story too. This story was just as fun and intriguing as the first one. Lauren Oliver never lets me down.

I was having a reading competition with my daughter. Both of us finished Replica (Also very good). I ordered a copy of Ringer for both of us. Every night we would call each other to see where we were in the book. We both agree this book is fantastic. The ending clearly leaves room for a third book in the series.

Love this book, I purchased it after reading Replica, I would recommend to anyone. The dual feature of two stories in one from different perspectives is amazing.

Good book and interesting having two perspectives and two ways to read it. I enjoyed it. Not my favorite book but i still enjoyed reading it.

Good ending to the story!

This sequel is emotionally intense and a bit too much explicit sexuality for my daughter. It was even a bit intense for me. That said, the characters are engaging, the complications believable, the narrative is tense. But I was so sad upon finishing, I cannot say I enjoyed it.
