Many self-help books are written to satisfy the ego of the writer: to promote their business, company or selves. Not bad or wrong, simply not valuable for a reader. Truth nuggets can be found in most successful people’s lives, but publishing a book to share them with the world is more often than not a business card rather than a well-written, meaningful and rich offering. Half Time is thankfully the latter.Notwithstanding a glowing review I do have one issue with the book…the subtitle. “Moving from Success to Significance†suggests the reader’s first half, was not significant, a notion I personally disagree with. This may be my own interpretation and bias, so don’t let that hinder you from reading, and benefitting, from a marvelous book. For those seeking, Buford’s nuggets will be savored, drawn out over weeks and months, processing life’s changes and how to maximize the future for ourselves and those around us.Any book at its core expresses the perspectives of one individual, even when shaped by the influence of mentors, teams and life experiences surrounding them. Buford’s Christianity is foundational to his perspective, but he does not indulge in proselytizing the reader. He simply presents his ideas couched in the paradigm of his life’s beliefs and values, and refreshingly so.Buford's business and financial success is neither flaunted nor hidden. The book is refreshingly well written and harbors no agenda. I found myself reading unhindered with Buford as a fellow traveler.I highly recommend this book to anyone in the enviable position of making it to 40 years old and asking themselves what they want to do when they grow up.
A good motivational book written by a successful guy from the town I live in. I remember back in the '80's when the tragedy occurred that turned the focus of Bob Buford's life thereafter. All accounts in the book of his life in the '80's are accurate as far as I remember. I think it is a compelling book regarding how your life can change in an instant and you are on a different course. The book was inspiring to me. His brother, whom I met last year offered me a copy of the book when I asked him about Bob's current life in Dallas. As Amazon can see, I've purchased several copies to give to others like for the library of my church which I understand from my pastor, Bob has and is helping even though he no longer lives here.
I started this book on a recommendation from our Senior Pastor. I thought, oh another self help book, this is what you should do with your life, or at least from the title, your second half. The beauty is it does not tell me what to do in the second half of my career, life, it provides food for thought. What do I want to do to contribute, make a difference. I found many similarities to my career work life, busy for 40 years chasing the dollars, promotions, etc. I now want to do something that 1) makes a difference in someone’s life for the better. 2) I believe it will reward my personally to know that I helped someone, making life better for them. As a Christian, we are taught to love your neighbor as yourself. What better way to demonstrate our love for our neighbor then to help them.
This book is written by Bob Burford, a man who decided there is more to life than making big bucks as a television executive. Somewhere in his early to mid-forties, he chose to cut his work schedule in half and pursue the more meaningful things in life--family, friends, and most importantly, the purpose for which God designed him.While the author makes the case that we should all do this very same thing in our own lives, he does not present the "how to" in a realistic fashion. Of course, this is only my opinion, but the average person may not find themselves in the position of having made millions (or even hundreds of thousands) by the time they are in their mid-forties. The author is also well-regarded in his industry, and was able to cut back on his work schedule at his leisure; in other words, the people he worked with would take him when they could get him, even if it was part-time. Again, not many find themselves in this position.That being said, Mr. Burford seems aware of this and does make suggestions for those who may not have the same resources as he, but some of these suggestions are a reach.There is value to reading the book however. Mr. Burford is on point with his assessment that there is more to life than making money or pursuing a position of authority in the work place. The discoveries he has made about his own life, passions, and disappointments, which includes dealing with the death of his son, can help the reader renew perspective on their own priorities.
This book was an eye-opener for me. A bit repetitive at times,but the central theme is quite convicting. An encouraging read for those sensitive to that undeniable nudge from the Holy Spirit to be a better steward of your Gifts. The first half of your career is about SUCCESS. The second half is about SIGNIFICANCE. The halftime in the middle is how/when you navigate that transition to Kingdom significance.
Great book on moving from pursuing to success to significance! Buford nails the mindset needed and addresses the challenges faced by those who may not have the financial leverage to quit their jobs.
I am going through this book with a group of friends. I really like the concept of evaluating where you are an making sure the second half of you life is leading to significance in a Godly manner.However, I was turned off by the over the top set of experiences the author comes from. I just continued to find it hard to relate to this guy. The group discussion has been very positive and from that perspective it has been worth the purchase.I have been getting more out of Verticle Church and Experiencing God.Update: I had fewer objections to the book as we are further into it.
Halftime is all about purpose and significance for men who are halfway there. It helps you to reflect on how far you've come, and to refuel fort the rest of the trip. I loved it!
