Beyond the challenge of interpreting O'Keeffe's artwork, Jeanette Winter's My Name Is Georgia (1998), which used a first-person narrative representing the artist's voice, set a high standard for both art and text. Addressing the same audience, Rodriguez finds her own distinctive way, telling O'Keeffe's story in third person but with great immediacy, using present tense and sentences that are short, direct, and poetic. After describing O'Keeffe's childhood, her goal of becoming an artist, her move from the city to New Mexico, and her bond with the land there, the author invites readers to let the artist "show you the world as she sees it." The final page expands on the story to give a more standard, detailed account of the artist's life. Paschkis creates vivid illustrations by using painted and cut papers to form collages representing the artist, her world, and her work. Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings have always captivated me. As a college student, I had a poster print of one of her paintings---a sinuous sandstone fissure---pressed on to a cheap foamboard backing, and toted it around from dormitory room to apartment to apartment until it was gouged and beaten up. Something about O'Keeffe's color palette, and her eye for natural lines of beauty, provoked within me a stillness even in unstill times.Somehow Rachel Rodriguez and Julie Paschkis have succeeded in conveying the contemplative beauty at the heart of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings and life. The prose is spare and reflective, mimicking the cadences of the natural world: "A canyon calls her. From the bottom at dusk she sees a long line of cows above, black lace against a dusky sky." The illustrations, cut-paper collages, mate the vibrant intensity of O'Keeffe's artistic vision with the simplicity and wonder of a child's.The first time I visited New Mexico and marveled at the quality of the light at daybreak and sunset, I couldn't help but wonder whether Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings had perfectly captured colors that are indescribable, or her paintings had so colored my perception that I saw the world through her eyes. This book brought a slice of that warm southwestern sunshine into my gray northwestern spring.I highly recommend "Through Georgia's Eyes." It is simply enchanting.

Loved this book and used it with my art students grades K-3. Beautiful pictures and they really loved the story of Georgia's life. I complimented it with a book of actual photographs of her flower paintings and the students did a great job making flowers in the style of Georgia. Highly recommended.... :)

Great book for teaching Georgia to elementary kids-My favorite, though, is Georgia's Bones!

I ordered this book for a stud of Georgia O'Keefe with preschoolers. It was perfect! Just the right balance of information and the class enjoyed it. I'd recommend purchasing it.

I've always been working in finance and have zero experience in the coffee industry. Like many of us, I feel worn out at work and have developed a fantasy of making a living just sitting in my own little coffee shop and chill through the day with my lovely cat. After reading just the first few chapters, I realized that I am still really far away from that dream. I am seriously considering taking some coffee classes and boy, they are pretty costly. Definitely an eye opening book for me and I feel like I have a much better direction to work towards instead of just dreaming all the time. Very quick and easy read, very to the point with no useless materials to waste your time on. Highly recommended as a first book into the business! Of course you will need to read more books as you progress through your plans to get a more in depth understanding on the business. But this is definitely the perfect first book on the subject.

I’m hoping to open a cafe in the next year and fortunately came across this book by luck! I had yet to find anything like this beforehand. I loved how straightforward and to the point it all was. I loved how realistic the information was and how it also gave encouragement with doses of good realty. The one thing I would have loved to read was an actual example of a small business coffee shop. Including their figures, how it did the first year, how they managed it, things like that. Other than that, I’m very grateful I found this book and I learned a lot of information that was needed! I’m grateful the author felt inspired to take the time to write it.

Easy to read and understand. Gave a backstage view into building a coffee house. I the author spoke of site, building, equipment and counter layout along with supplies, budget, salary and long term fiance. Great eye opener for the dreamer and the business person. I feel this book gave me the insight to learn and prepare more for this journey. The author provided valuable insight and experience. I now have a glimpse into the journey ahead of me.

This book is by far the best one I've read while research opening a coffee shop! Easy to understand and a lot of good information!

I like that this book can be a quick reference for the things it goes over. It explains things in a concise, but meaningful way. This book will definitely be with me when I eventually start my business and I’m glad to have it. I couldn’t find many things I didn’t like about this book considering it did exactly what it says. It’s a short, but factual resource.

I like the way things are broke down to make the reading simple. I was able to create a buisness plan outline . Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Great read and highly recommend.

I found this book worthwhile, but not what I would call 'the perfect solution". I am over 70 and have spent my life living frugally, continually saving and investing for the future and retirement. I have been quite successful at growing net worth, while living comfortably. I truly believe a key component is learning who you are and understanding how you are best suited to reach your goals. I personally think this book is too caught up in looking at every penny. I think each penny is important, but have focused on being sure there is constant savings. I don't expect my approach to work for everyone, but I want to emphasize that there can be many paths to reach the same goals. I suggest reading a wide variety of approaches that focus on saving and investing for the long haul. I have made small changes along the way when trying new things. In the end I have found that success came with simplicity. Look for the big picture in the book and any other. Growing wealth is like growing a big tree, strong trees grow big over a long time.

Basic principles of this book are decent, however, the principles are not gold and it could be summed up well in 50 pages or less...not the redundant, ranting 300 page book it is.First 80 pages of the book are worthless and torture mostly focusing on the consumerism/doomed/horrible smog-infested society we live in, last two chapters most useful and can be read in a bookstore.I did not like many examples given; it seemed to focus on divorce excessively with ~ 80% of case report examples of "FI-ers" being divorced which I found rather odd and unnecessary to mention.Take home points of this book: Spend less than you earn, save, document every penny you spend, become a minimalist and only purchase things you need, the less you need the more fulfilled you will be, the less you will work, etc.Things to consider:1) The "FIer" lifestyle is not for everyone- I equate an "FIer" to the tiny home movement in principle.2) Book recommends that bonds should be the mainstay and the only thing in your portfolio. I strongly would discourage this. "Safe" bonds which I pretty much consider anything that that is not a junk bond or preferred stock bond, are not hitting the high yields that Joe Dominguez saw in his day and on many years aren't comparing to rises in inflation. While you can never predict the stock market, when looking at time tables- it always goes up. Traditionally, stock markets rise while bond yields go down some and visa versa. The best way for security and safety is proper allocation to each of these modalities: bonds (treasury bonds are great as mentioned in the book because you aren't charged state taxes, however, what the book fails to remind you of is that federal taxes are still fair game) and diversified stock portfolio most safely done by investing in mutual index funds with low fees (e.g. Vanguard). The older you are, for safety, the more bonds you should have in case the stock market plummets during your retirement years. For conservatives a 60% mutual funds and 40% bonds is recommended. For a retirement person, 20% stocks and 80% bonds should be considered. When you have all your eggs in one basket, you lose that safety net.3) Other things I disagree with in this book- everyone should have health insurance, you should not forgo this to "save" money; sure buy the less comprehensive plan if you are healthy and pay less and have a higher deductible but you are gambling when you forgo it all together.4) They also suggest in this book "rolling-over" your 401k and 403b accounts to bonds; however, these are pre-taxed dollars and you will likely get slammed- most retirement plans now give options to the "risk" or rather stock/bond ratio you desire. I would more likely suggest rolling money to Roth IRAs (post-tax and therefore tax free with capital gains) or just leave your nest egg to compound growth where they are at.Now I am ranting. Cheers.

The first 8 chapters of the book are great, chapter 9 should just be deleted. The original book recommended putting 100% in Treasuries. Since that is clearly a terrible idea now, the book grudgingly recommends index funds.The thing that drives me nuts is the book says that it took 25 years for the stock market to recover from the Great Depression. This is a lie, when you account for dividends and deflation it took 4.5 years to recover if you put a lump sum in at the absolute peak.If you’re going to try and scare people at least be honest. Also if you’re going to pretend that 100% treasuries was a great idea in the 80s at least mention that a 60/40 stock bond blend would have blown it out of the water.

As a Certified Financial Planner professional with over ten years of experience helping clients with retirement planning, I'm sincerely impressed by this book, and have to say that this is a powerful resource for anyone that is seriously interested in becoming Financially Independent (FI). My only feedback is that the book, doesn't emphasize enough, how difficult it is, when you have a spouse or life partner, to change deeply rooted financial money scripts and behaviors. That said, if you (and your life partner) are dedicated to Financial Independence, then this read, is in my professional opinion, a very worthy investment of "life energy" in deed. The content is good, but it is written as if someone just dictated a seminar that lasted a week. It is full of "take Mary for example, she did blah blah blah and blah blah happened" followed by 3 more examples. Yea, I get it. I got it before the example and now I am just annoyed skimming past the examples thinking about the trees that were killed for no reason. Overall, there is some good content in the book, but it could have been cut down 25% easily. After reading the first half of the book I learned to just skip over the examples and skim some of the paragraphs to keep my sanity to make it through to the end

This is the perfect finance book for someone who is now starting out and really for anyone that is trying to get a different perspective on money and how they handle it.However there are some flaws with it number one being that I don’t believe that financial independence or the crossover point as it is called in the book is that easy to maintain once it is reached as several of the examples in the book spoke of people having to readjust their lifestyle when life changed which is something that we all know will happen.Overall however I think tracking your money, seeing your money as your life energy, tracking your income versus expenses for a long period of time and using the three questions to see if you’re getting the best value both emotionally and in line with your values is excellent advice so I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationship with money.

About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse. "Hellboy" is a clever and unique creation that's often hard to describe to someone who's never heard of it. The closest I've been able to come is this: it's like Raiders of the Lost Ark mixed with The X-Files. It's the light-and-dark inkwork of Frank Miller's Sin City, but with vivid use of color. It's got action and horror, gore and humor, and it's hard not to find something to like about it.Even though this particular Hellboy story is fairly far along in the series, most of these graphic novel collections don't require that you know a lot of the background in order to enjoy them. Each reminds us that Hellboy is a magical being, was created/summoned by the Nazis during World War II (but fell into the hands of the Allies), and works for the fictional "Bureau for Paranormal Research & Defense" (B.P.R.D.), an organization that exists to track down odd happenings and put the monsters down. Each graphic novel also contains one or more complete story arcs, and that makes for a good read: you know you're not going to be left hanging or left in the dark.When you look at Hellboy stories, this novel is probably the most pivotal. From the beginning, we have a paranormal-nazi tale that points to earlier adventures, we're told that Hellboy's love interest Liz is temporarily out of the picture, and we're introduced to another odd new character in Mignola's pantheon: "Lobster Johnson". Last, the opening scenes put a rather nasty spin on the B.P.R.D., the agency for which Hellboy works. The title is taken from Poe's "Ligiea", and it weaves dialog from the poem into the story well.If you're a fan of the series, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to the world of Hellboy, you might enjoy some of the earlier stories, but you can easily start here if you wish.

This is an important volume in the Hellboy story--big things happen. Fegredo's art is perfect for Mignola's world, and Mignola's clearly been cooking some of this stuff for a while. Editor Scott Allie's preface is weirdly and unnecessarily ungracious to a previous attempt at getting somebody to do the art, and Jane Yolen's introduction is sort of self-aggrandizing, but if you come for the Mignola or the Hellboy, you won't be disappointed. Even the last thirty pages or so of sketchbook art, which often feels like padding, is worthwhile.

I originally purchased the first four editions of the Hellboy Library for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day this year. Then in July, Amazon let me know there was another one being released. I was so excited. It made shopping for his birthday in October much easier, lol. He's only had it a week and I'm pretty sure he finished it.I'm glad they're all in nice hardback volumes for him to enjoy and thanks Amazon for letting me know the next one was released!

Conqueror Worm is no doubt yet another amazing Hellboy story, however mine came in with the binding completely off. I had to buy special glue just to fix it.

This book is BY FAR my favorite of the series. Great purchase for any fan or newcomer to the series. Any one of these can be picked up and read on their own.

Great stories and great art; Duncan Fegredo is my favorite Hellboy interpreter after the master, himself. Love the Library format. There are some nice character sketches thrown in for good measure.

I have all of the series. I love this manga. There are enough yaoi parts. Where it gets me all giddy, but what I don't like is the ending. Spoiler: They move out, enter college and then it is like ten years later..... Like what happened to the in between. It's nice that it is finished and well though out.It's a weird place to end at volume 6. Most mangas end at volume 12 or have a second series.Love the story other wise and love the secondary characters evolve. However, Tono and Tamiya are my favorite. This is a perfect for a starter collection of any yaoi fan or just anyone who wants romance regardless of: boyxboy or boy and girl. It's so cute. The yaoi also isn't to hard core which really nice.

It was such a wonderful series I felt like I was on the journey with each couple I am so sorry it had to end I love the 10 year update though

I've been following this series since it started and am so happy with the conclusion :) it was cute and just what I expected, love this artist and this will always be one of my favorite series.

Terrific series! I followed this since the beginning and I'm a bit emotional to see it end. I grew up with it so it's amazing to see the characters around the same age as me now. It's one of those series that makes you believe in the strength of love. I'll miss it but it was amazing!!

Was fast and I love this series so much. Came in a plastic wrap so it is new!

I was so happy to see everything worked out so well for all the couples! Saturo and Keigo's ending was perfect and everything a reader could want. Yu and Kagami's ending was perfect for them as well. Plus, it was great to see Saturo's parents and how they are doing since they're just awesome!Overall, this was the perfect ending to an excellent series and I highly, highly recommend it!

I liked this audiobook but it was bit of a disappointment after absolutely loving the first two books in the series. This was a re-read for me but I actually didn't remember anything about it from my initial read years ago. I am actually pretty sure that this is the book that I stopped on when I started the series the first time. It was a good book but it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining as the first two in the series were for me.This book started out really strong with Rachel having to deal with Big Al. Things looked pretty bad for her and I had no idea how she was going to outsmart him. She ends up getting a bit of help from his familiar and a werewolf insurance agent. It was a close call for Rachel and while she is trying to recover a secret slips out and Jenks ends up mad...and leaves. I missed Jenks constant presence in this book.This book really seemed a bit more focused on the character relationships. I can't say that I really liked all of the developments in this installment. Nick can't handle being near Rachel so he leaves town. Rachel starts dating Kisten and while they have chemistry it seemed to happen way too fast. Ivy is having her own struggles with Piscary and staying in control. Jenks needs some time away to cool down. This felt like more of a transitional book that may be laying the framework for future books.I did enjoy the narration in this audiobook. Marguerite Gavin is really the perfect narrator for this series. She is Rachel in my mind but she also performs all of the different voices very well. I never have any trouble understanding who is speaking and her delivery really keeps my focus on the story.I would recommend this book to others. This is the third book in the series and I really do think that this series needs to be read in order since everything builds from the earlier books. Readers who try to read this as a stand alone will most likely be quite lost. I am looking forward to starting the next audiobook in this series very soon!

Don't let other reviewers compare her to Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake, since I no longer read that series since Anita became a sex sucking demon, I gave up hoping she'd get back to ass kicking. Now there's little miss Rachel, getting good at recovering from severe ass kickings, slapped around by bigger and badder bad guys, every few chapters.I won't read a story where the lead doesn't learn and improve.I'm giving this one more book.Why? Because the writer usually gives up on the character after a few books anyway, why should I pay for apathy? If Rachel gets slapped in the face ONE MORE TIME! I'm done here too.

Looking for a romance with some action and fantasy thrown in? This series is for you. Looking for some quality fantasy and action with less focus on romance? I'd look elsewhere. Technically, the writing was fine, but the content had me skimming, and was not all that engaging to read. The description of magic and whatnot was nebulous and vague feeling, and the main heroine seemed to be frustratingly helpless, yet strangely powerful, all at the same time.She escapes seemingly hopeless situations on small technicalities, not due to any skill of her own, and that gets somewhat blase over the course of the series. Most of the detail was given to relationships and romance, with less attention given to the magic and action. Not my cup of tea, but a ok read for someone who is interested in this kind of stuff. If you are looking for a more action/magic oriented urban fantasy series, I would recommend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

Every Which Way but Dead is an apt title for this book, because Rachel will do almost anything in order to make sure she’ll be alive when all is said and done. So if you’re even later than me to The Hollows series, continue to read if you don’t mind knowing some of what has happened in the first two books.From the beginning of Every Which Way but Dead, Nick is very distant, and he seems to become more distant with each interaction between him and Rachel. Rachel tries her best to make things better, but he seems to be reluctant to move forward, and always has excuses ready so they won’t have time to see each other. When she shows up at his house unexpectedly and sees that he is more or less ready to move away, she feels like she’s been hit in the gut – even if she wants to believe him when he says it’s so that he won’t feel it every time she touches a ley-line.Al wants what Rachel has promised him, and when Rachel summons him, he arrives with his soon-to-be former familiar in tow. Of course, Rachel now wants to save both the other woman and herself. Negotiating with Al is not an easy task, and Ceri, the woman he promises Rachel he’ll free is so out of it she is hardly even conscious. I love that Rachel can be just as sneaky as a demon, and I was almost clapping my hands when Al realized he wasn’t going to be able to get Rachel exactly where he wanted her – at least not at first.Apart from all her trouble with Al and work, Rachel soon realizes that her personal life will become even more of a roller coaster once she agrees to something Kist asks her. And then, somehow, she gets more entangled with Trent as well – until she ends up in an extremely uncomfortable situation for a while.The action is on every page, as is the humor and the growing relationships among the friends and partners. I love getting to know Ivy, Jenks and Rachel better, and the way they interact is great. Of course, because Rachel has trust-issues, things don’t go as she hoped when someone finds out the hard way that Rachel hasn’t been completely honest with them. And I am left thinking that maybe some relationships cannot be mended at all. New characters arriving might also cause trouble for Rachel, especially when she realizes the depth of the relationship some of those have with the people who are close to her.

I first read all the Hollows books as they came out, many as library books. Now I'm buying the whole series for my Kindle and loving them all over again. It's been about ten years and they are still fast paced exciting stories which keep pulling me on at a high consumption rate. Fantasy that hangs together and makes a coherent world with excellent history and a viable alternative present.
