A very interesting book. It prompts the reader to critically think about the different stories that are told--on many occasions I found myself pausing and thinking how the scenario suggested has played out, or may play out, in my own community. I thought a lot about what I, as an American, want from the house I just bought and whether or not Ms. Gallagher had correctly judged my generation's desires from my own perspective. That being said, Ms. Gallagher is a resident of the country's most urban environment and may not necessarily be well placed to pass judgement on the types of communities she has clearly personally rejected as "good."The most interesting parts were the discussion how we got here and some of the challenges presented for the future by the current housing stock. The introduction to New Urbanism was also very interesting, as I'm familiar with, but could never name these distinct communities.I think the discussion around future drivers of change in housing demand lacked much support, however. We get a massive amount of detail around the creation of suburban communities thanks to GM-inspired futurism, how they no longer encourage "neighborliness" because there are less children around, and how their street designs discourage human contact while encouraging traffic accidents etc etc. But besides these "negative" innate characteristics of suburban communities (which are likely considered positives when viewed differently by many of the residents of these homes), the author doesn't really suggest more than one reason why everyone will be abandoning them which she strongly suggests will happen. That one reason? Gas prices. This seems like an massive over-simplification. There was no discussion of the major technological changes happening to automobiles a this very moment. Gas prices are likely to be much less important to consumers 20 years from now than they are today. Even more critically, the author does not mention the massive technological revolution that has changed how many, many people work. The requirement to actually go and sit in a physical office day in and day out is on the decline in most every industry. Cheap telephony and the rise of the internet enable people to stay in communication wherever they are and fewer and fewer people are making the trek into the office each day. Additionally, many of these offices are no longer in the urban core as companies move closer to where their employees live. This will expand, rather than contract, some people's choices on housing. I was really quite surprised at the omission. Sometimes key data or perspectives appear to be left out because they would conflict with the author's overall message and personal opinion. Finally, I was disappointed that there was no discussion on what's next for suburbs other than to suggest that farther flung ones will be abandoned and will turn into ghettoes. This is not terribly helpful. If the author believes that the suburbs do not provide the housing stock people of the future will want, I'd love to hear ways people have for transforming the already built environment into something that WILL be what people want. There is limited amounts of land around metropolitan areas and most of it has been developed. And much of it is suburban housing stock. These homes cannot be just discarded if people want to avoid all this driving, as the author suggests they do. It is likewise not possible to simply bulldoze them and re-zone the land. Homes in these communities will remain desirable because of where they are located particularly in pricey coastal cities, even if the community's character is not people would design today. So what can we do to revitalize these places for the future Ms. Gallagher?I recommend this--it seems to have some missing pieces--but it made me think a lot before I would agree or disagree with each premise proffered. That is the sign of a good book.

This book is a quick read, and hits all the major points of its thesis very well. Proofreading could have been better, though. A sprinkling of misspelled words, a scattering of weird sentence constructions. Did any actual human check this text? The book sometimes reads as advice and explanations to housing developers, sometimes as a study of historical forces and sociological trends. It is a good overview for the casual reader who is interested in our changing society and the shift that happened after the housing meltdown.— from Mrs. CyberDad

I liked the book. Unfortunately it raised more questions that it answered. The author has a very interesting point of view and the book read well. By the second part of the book, there was some repetition and the book seemed to focus only on the upper middle class individuals. Also the book raised gentrification without defining it nor explaining how it affects neighborhoods. This is a good book to introduce the concepts, and as the start of a conversation about the suburbs.

Really enjoyed this book. Helped that the author lived minutes from where I grew up so I was very familiar with her tome. Unfortunately I am now living in the exurbs as she describes but at least I know I'm not as alone in this as I thought I was. Hopefully she will write another book about how to escape this type of living that I feel trapped in. She was so right with so many statements that my husband has told me were in my mind. I'm leaving this type of life, with or without him. Exurbs of nothing lead to nothing and to me are pointless. Still wondering why I wasted a fortune going to a top university to marry and end up here. DH isn't from here. This happened by fluke.

I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about this topic since I'm a real estate agent focused on urban properties and I see the movement of people from the suburbs into the city, but there was a lot of information in this book that I didn't know. It was very readable and well researched, it's like reading a New York Times feature article -- very enjoyable and interesting!

The writer makes market trends and demographics shifts entertaining to read. What more could you ask for? I have lived in rural and urban areas, but I really thought I knew something about suburban life since it's so prominent in pop culture. Oh, boy, there's a lot I didn't understand about the suburban experience and how it's changing! I gulped this book down and am recommending it to everyone I know involved in policy. There's a counterintuitive epiphany on every page. Read it on the Kindle and might buy it in paperback to let people borrow it.

Does a nice job explaining how various styles of development came to be, and gets into whether current trends will hold up over time. Factors like rising gas prices and the trend back toward urban living may impact the fringes of metropolitan areas. it has a conversational tone. Very accessible to anyone interested in understanding residential housing developments a bit better.

I just got this book yesterday. I dove in immediately, anxious to dig in and learn how to use my Raspberry Pi to its fullest potential. This book offers plain English instructions and explanations. I was pleased to see that this is not another book that reads like a manual. The author does not assume that you are already an expert, but instead explains the jargon and concepts in order for the reader to GAIN an understanding. The reader stands to learn a lot from picking up this book.

Will buy again.

Excellent

Well-written and organized introduction to the Raspberry Pi. A few too many "Linux amazing, Windows bad" comments and insinuations sprinkled throughout the text for my liking but bashing Microsoft is all the rage nowadays, so not too surprising. The full-color pictures and multi-color text portions make the book an enjoyable read.

I looked at a number of Raspberry Pi books and this was one of my favorites. It did a good job of explaining how the Pi worked and how to get started with a number of fun projects.

As advertised

My impression is: "Timothy is a very qualified writer". I recommend this book. - Andreas, Denmark

Very disappointed in this book, I pre-ordered this book back in August knowing that it was not complete, and was happy waiting, and would still be happy waiting if they would have proofed this book. Mind you I have only skimmed threw this book, but I have found at least 4 errors in 2 chapters. Then there are the "tiny URLs" everywhere. The book does not explain as much as it is sending you to places on the web. When I buy a book I like to read a book, and I also like to have all my information right there, without having to run to a computer every other paragraph to get the full answer. Links and sites come and go, which makes this book useless in the near future if not currently, again I have only skimmed it so links could already be gone.I would send it back but that would cost me money. So I am stuck with it.So if you still are thinking about this book.1) There are errors2) You need a computer to reference all the links to get the full picture of what he is trying to do.3) Good Luck!

An inspiring book that reflects the power of will. The book also talks about a side of the arts that doesn’t get much attention; besides the beauty that the audience sees—there are the trials of relationships and difficult artistic director personalities that can either make or break an artist. Thankfully, this artist made it and his story elevates the human spirit.

A very touching and honest account of a life that passed through the ultimate success and endured unbearable pain. A man who danced with strength and charisma, that found grace by experiencing a fall from grace.

Just finishing Beyond My Dreams By Mel Tomlinson. Heart wrenching and so inspirational . You will laugh and you will cry. Mel shares his life from humble beginning in NC to his journey as an international ballet dancer and all his struggles in between. This is an honest intimate true story. I couldn't but it down.

So inspiring. Thank you for sharing such intimate detail of your life!

Great reading

I purchased this book directly from the author.I have read a lot of biographies by and/or about dancers. This is one of the best ballet biographies I have ever read.It is not a pretty story about girls in fluffy white tutus. It is a honest telling of a difficult path of an extremely talented black man who had a gift for ballet during a time that being a male dancer, black and gay were all things the public found difficult to accept. It is also the story of how true friends will always be there in your time of need.Thank you to Mel for having the courage to tell your story in such an un-glorified way.And thank you to Claudia for writing the story.

I couldn’t put this down! What a moving and inspirational story. The writer takes you through Mel’s life as if you are experiencing each moment by his side. I could see this being made into a movie one day. A must read.

I admit that I chose to obtain this audiobook What I Know For Sure by Oprah Winfrey because of the multiple positive reviews. Oprah gets candid on how her history shaped her upbringing including the emotional pain that she carried with her family history and her true feelings when one of her family members revealed what was then a major secret about her. With relief, she narrated that Graham Stedman was there to comfort her and much more. I also found it healing that she emphasizes that every challenging moment has a silver lining and that your greatest challenge/struggle can produce your greatest strength and more information.

Great Book. Great Timing.I just got free from a very long, bad relationship. Packed my stuff and grabbed my dog. Rented a UHaul and headed across the country to start new again. (I am 63yrs). Bought this Audio book to listen to as I drive.I felt all the old yuck stuff leave, and the new stuff flowing in... There is so much inspiration.Perfect book for anyone wanting to find joy and a better look at living. Will listen to it many more times. Sue

I bought this book after reading amazing reviews about it on Amazon. I really wanted to like this book, but it was just a bunch of small stories..........But I already read so many blogs/articles with similar stories that I just could not find anything new. I couldn't finish the book beyond the first 30% of it.

This book, I bought it as a gift for a loved one, but ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting. It's not just a book, but a keepsake-one that you can revisit again and again. It's beautifully made too, which seems to be an Oprah book trademark. It'll stand the test of time in both its physical craftsmanship as well as the jewels of contents within.

This book has become a staple in our household that I have gifted, and re-gifted to so many people! If you are interested, the audio version of the book if read by Oprah herself, and gives you a different take on what she's emphasizing through each lesson.I recommend you read this book one lesson at a time and keep re-reading it for a few days until you've caught on to what she's trying to teach. That way you can really internalize the book and enjoy it throughout the entire year.I love it so much, that it has become a routine to read this book at least once a year and it's cheaper on Amazon then anywhere else I've been able to find so far.

This book has some wonderful advice of self-acceptance, knowing you are worth and how to share your kindness to others. Her voice and timing felt as though you were talking to an old friend that was passing on their wisdom. While the end of the book I felt was a bit repetitive it really drives homes the point and you cannot control the world around you but in this moment and this time you can decide on what truly will make your heart full of love by trusting your instincts and allowing time for yourself.

The advise seems too simplistic. I did appreciate her telling about her background. She seems to realize that she is not perfect and she is "speaking " to people who have many imperfections too. I admire her very much and know she helps people of all races and conditions. Her advice affects us all.

I will recommend this book to everyone in my life. I will purchase this book for all the women in my life. I gave this book review 5 stars because it touched on every major point in my life the very belief I held in my heart that took me to the other side of the challenges this book confirmed my heart was on the right path. At all times-during those situations I looked within for the answers and my heart has never failed to protect me. Oprah inspires me to continue on my path and step it up a notch or more. At 53 I removed myself from a 13 year relationship and struggled with at my age a chance to love again is over. Today is six months since I asked him to leave. I now know without a doubt my life is just getting started. This was the perfect book to read and inspire me to continue on with all that I am. I do know this that we are not here to be loved it is to love others - along the way if love finds us as it will, it's a bonus. I realized when I left the love for myself was greater than that dysfunctional relationship. I wake up each day in wonder and an open heart because that is just who I am and I love every fiber of me. Thank you Oprah for the confirmation that my path is mine to create and if a situation doesn't align with all that I am it's ok to walk away.

What I know for sure is that Oprah wrote a fine book. It's a series of short essays with the theme of what Oprah knows for sure. She sometimes tells how she got there. It's wonderful. I feel better having just read it.It's a pretty book. One made for keeping forever or giving as a gift. After reading just part way I sent a copy to my grown daughters. I hope they love it as much as I do.

Maggie Dallen is the perfect YA high school romance author. (She’s also pretty darn impressive with Regency Period and adult contemporary romances, but that’s a different story). Somehow her high school romances resonate with my own (long distant) memories of high school like no other. That’s the case once again with The Perfect Catch (Kissing the Enemy Book 1). Callie and Noah’s romance is fun to watch even as it goes through all it’s teething pains. Total fun, and since it’s book 1 in a new series that means there are more to come. I’m presuming it’s the other gals on Callie and Noah’s mixed gender team, and am already guessing (hoping on) who they will pair up. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

17-yo Callie is good at softball. I like softball; it was one of the few sports I was actually good at ;) Callie is sweet and innocent, but not shy. Noah is her brother’s best friend and he used to be her friend too. But now he’s so cold and distant. Rude even. She thinks she represents his lost opportunities. When she gets the chance to play for the recruiters, she wants to give it her all. But then she does something wrong. She never does anything wrong and the one time she does she gets caught and punished. The universe isn’t fair.Alternating POV’s Callie and Noah. Which was good, because by just Callie’s POV in the beginning you could have thought Noah really wasn’t a nice person. It could have become one-sided and now it wasn’t, so that was really nice. There’s a lot of thought process giving us insight in their feelings. Maybe a little too much thought during conversations, but I did really like it. It was a sweet story.

Adorable! A romance that is unexpected and thrilling. The book doesn't follow the normal narrative for sweet romances and you can't expect what will happen next.A perfect quick read for those who enjoy swoonworthy kisses and tough as nails girls.

Oh man, I fell in love with this little jewel. It grab me so tight it didn't let go until the last word. If you're looking for a sweet, breathtaking, heartwarming, humorous, beating the odds, love and adoration enhanced read, then look no further. This little baby will rock you right along with the characters as their personalities transform and blend into the roles they were created for. Maggie nailed this bad boy with all the twists and turns bringing us together for a show stopping love that goes distance. The characters are well developed and so realistic I felt I could just reach out and touch them. The scenes are vivid and detailed so you have no problem seeing them come alive before your eyes. Every story I've read of Maggie's just flows so smoothly as if it was always there. Maggie did a phenomenal job bringing this read together beautifully. Fantastic job Maggie, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.

Maggie Dallen has created a story about baseball, softball and love that will keep you in your seat until you have finished reading this book. Maggie has done an excellent job of describing what athletes who love the game go through to get that scholarship to college to help out their families. It takes perseverance, tenacity, good grades and the willingness to stick to it. She has created characters that are very believable. It is devastating when one of those athletes is injured in high school or early in college and is unable to accomplish their dream of college and pro ball. Callie Cooper, her brother Eric and Noah Mason grew up next to each other in a middle class neighborhood. Friends all through school neither Callie nor Noah expected to fall in love much to Eric's dismay.Maggie also nailed it when Callie doesn't follow the rules at a camp at Fairfield University and is benched mid-camp and is unable to play the big game at the end where she could be seen by college recruiters. This story is very believable and well written. I highly recommend this one. I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

>Book Review – The Perfect Catch>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Kissing the Enemy series and ends in an HEA. Noah is a college freshman who was injured and had to give up his dream of playing baseball. His BFFs sister is a high school senior ant at his college for a summer softball camp. He tries to ignore her, as he doesn’t think he should have a crush on her. She doesn’t understand his actions and is hurt.>This book has a lot of “we gotta talk”, but nothing really gets talked about. The romance is sweet, but only really comes together at the very end. There aren’t many Noah and Callie as a couple scenes, which would have been nice. For a sports book, there weren’t many sports scenes either.> This book is appropriate for a young adult (16+) audience. I am giving this story 4 stars. There needs to be more story.

This book is perfectly adorable. I loved the alternating pov between the two characters and the storyline was very fast-paced and fun. Some mild swearing but otherwise clean and no sex. This was one of my favourites of this author’s works (so far). I highly recommend it.

Another awesome sweet clean romance by Maggie Dalle ! Callie is at a softball clinic where she sees her brothers best friend who use to be her friend too but now Noah either avoids her or asks like a jerk but after one kiss all that changes. They go from friends to enemies to working together to help Callie show her skills to something more. Another great book can’t wait for more in the series!

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar, by Cheryl Strayed

Review

“Penning an advice column for the literary website The Rumpus, [Strayed] worked anonymously, using the pen name Sugar, replying to letters from readings suffering everything from loveless marriages to abusive, drug-addicted brothers to disfiguring illnesses. The result: intimate, in-depth essays that not only took the letter writer’s life into account but also Strayed’s. Collected in a book, they make for riveting, emotionally charged reading (translation: be prepared to bawl) that leaves you significantly wiser for the experience. . . . Moving. . . . compassionate.” —Leigh Newman, Oprah.com “A fascinating blend of memoir and self-help. Strayed is an eloquent storyteller, and her clear-eyed prose offers a bracing empathy absent from most self-help blather.” —Nora Krug, The Washington Post  “Strayed’s worldview—her empathy, her nonjudgment, her belief in the fundamental logic of people’s emotions and experiences despite occasional evidence to the contrary—begins to seep into readers’ consciousness in such a way that they can apply her generosity of spirit to their own and, for a few hours at least, become better people. . . . The book’s disclosures—on the part of both the writer and her correspondents—is ultimately courageous and engaging stuff.” —Anna Holmes, New York Times Book Review  “Wise and compassionate.” —Gregory Cowles, New York Times Book Review “Inside the List”    “It seems inadequate to call ‘Dear Sugar’ an advice column, because it exists in a category all its own . . . Part memoir, part essay collection, the aptly titled Tiny Beautiful Things gathers together stunningly written pieces on everything from sex to love to the agonies of bereavement. Strayed offers insights as exquisitely phrased as they are powerful, confronting some of the biggest and most painful of life’s questions. . . . . In her responses, Strayed shines a torch of insight and comfort into the darkness of these people’s lives, cutting to the heart of what it means to love, to grieve and to suffer.”  —Ilana Teitelbaum, Shelf Awareness  “What makes a great advice columnist? . . . Strayed has proved during her tenure at the website the Rumpus, where she has helmed the Dear Sugar column since 2010, that the only requirement is that you give great advice—tender, frank, uplifting and unrelenting. Strayed’s columns, now collected as Tiny Beautiful Things, advise people on such diverse struggles as miscarriage, infidelity, poverty and addiction, and it's really hard to think of anyone better at the job. Strayed has succeeded largely because she shares personal, often heartbreaking stories from her own life in answering readers' questions. Her experiences are qualifications, in a sense, as Strayed has taken the wisdom she gained from personal tragedies, including her mother's early death and the breakup of her first marriage, and generously applied it to all manner of issues. . . . What runs through all the columns, which range from a few hundred to a few thousand words in length, is Strayed’s gift at panning out from the problem in question. Often, the fuller picture that Strayed gives us illustrates what needs to happen for the letter-writers to change, to pull themselves out of their current predicament, to see things in a different way, to act. . . . Here is Strayed’s breathtaking ability to get to the core of her own failures and triumphs, which she often does through surprising and sharp imagery. . . . Strayed has covered much ground in these transformative pieces. In the end, Tiny Beautiful Things serves as a guide for anyone who is lost, and those who only think they might be.” —Liz Colville, San Francisco Chronicle  “As Sugar, Strayed addresses questions about love, family, addition, grief, abuse, afflictions, fears, friends, gossip, among other topics—and in each of her answers, without fail, she meets the letter writers with a kind of startling compassion; what Steve Almond termed ‘radical empathy.’ Dear Sugar is an advice column like no other.” —Nika Knight, Full Stop  “It is very rarely that I am a ridiculous fangirl about anything. It’s so emotionally taxing, so inherently undignified, that I try not to fall into the trap. So it took me by surprise when, upon discovering Dear Sugar at the Rumpus, I gradually fell down the rabbit hole into ridiculous fangirlishness for the first time in years. [Strayed took me to] the edge of the dark wood, staring into the place where the most wrenching and lovely truths reside. A place to lose your heart and find it again. If there is a common thread that unites the columns, it’s work. Sugar doesn’t tolerate laziness: doing the work to reach one’s full potential, to write that novel, to exorcise ghosts, to let go of resentments and jealousy and commit instead to generosity and love—all of these are sacred, lifelong tasks for which there are no shortcuts. The columns are a gift, and so too is the book. As Sugar herself bids in her column of the same name, I've written this now on the eve of her book’s publication with one intent: to say thank you.” —Ilana Teitelbaum, The Huffington Post  “Typically an advice column might not be the first thing to come to mind when considering examples of fearless first-person writing. But Cheryl’s Dear Sugar column is a major exception in that way. In the majority of her column entries, she boldly delves into her own life, to places where she’s had to overcome obstacles similar to those her letter-writers have experienced. Her understanding and compassion are real and hard won, rooted in her own experiences. And so is her sometimes butt-kicking advice. ‘If I was able to do this,’ she seems to be saying, ‘so can you, sweet pea. Now get off your ass and do it.’ The stakes may have seemed lower when she was writing the column anonymously. But Cheryl says she always knew she’d eventually reveal herself—which she did in April. Now many of her best Dear Sugar columns have been gathered into Tiny Beautiful Things, a collection that goes on sale this week (and is available through The Rumpus). Her name is on it; the revelations, the fearless admissions are hers. And I’m awed.” —Sari Botton, The Rumpus  “Sugar didn’t pen a few plucky paragraphs about how to pick yourself up by your socks and move on from whatever horrors befell you—in many cases Sugar’s letters were heart-rending exhumations of her own past in search of parallels to the advice-seeker’s situation. She didn’t shy from plumbing her own failings, flaws, and troubles. But in the end, Sugar’s columns are about heart and love. Not saccharine, treacly love that comes from greeting cards, but the gritty, painful, sometimes mundane work it takes to love yourself, warts and all. Tiny Beautiful Things isn’t really a compilation of her advice columns. More, it’s a series of essays about life in all its grimy, unpleasant heartache, and a plea to rise above it to love truthfully and deeply and well, despite all our handicaps. Sugar navigates the path through the treacherous human psyche as a shining beacon before us, flickering in the dark. . . .  [She] gives her best, even when she’s tired. . . . I’m glad that the world is learning about all the love that Sugar has to give.” —Quenby Moone, The Nervous Breakdown “Strong, smart and self-assured: those qualities are in full power in [Tiny Beautiful Things]. Strayed doesn’t just give good advice. People write in with the most wrenching personal problems, and receive generous, seriously motivating inspiration to move on and do better. . . . Dear Sugar is a rare hideout from the prevailing meanness of the Internet. She calls her readers Sweet Peas, shares stunningly intimate stories about her life, and writes with true warmth and kindness. And it’s not an act. . . . Strayed aims to help not just the people whose letters she answers, but the wider audience who reads the exchanges. Her responses are direct and personal, but peppered with universal messages that cut to the heart.” —Amy Goetzman, MinnPost “Why do we read memoirs? Some choose autobiographies to better understand the lives and histories of important men and women. Some might hope that the experiences and insights of a personal essay might unveil a small truth about the human condition, might teach us about ourselves. Some of us might just be busybodies, looking for a socially acceptable way to peek deeply into a stranger’s life. If you fit into any of these categories, you must meet Dear Sugar, the ultimate advice columnist for lovers of memoirs. Tiny Beautiful Things is a collection of her works, interspersed with Q&As from Sugar herself. The columns were written anonymously, but with an amount of personal detail that no advice column has ever seen before. In a gracious, sassy, poetic and maternal voice, Sugar shares her own raw personal accounts . . . She runs a highlighter over the breathtaking aspects of mundane tasks, from wedding planning to the day-to-day duties of raising small children. By the last page of the book, which will likely be a bit wrinkled with tear stains by the time you’re through, you may know more about Sugar than you know about your closest friends. . . .Though many of the letters she receives contain ugliness and woe, she weaves them together into a story that is unexpectedly beautiful and impossibly warm. There’s no shortage of conversations on love and sex, but we words also go beyond that. . . . There’s something worth quoting on almost every page. . . . Eloquent . . . Generous.” —Kara Zuaro, Biogrophile  “In this collection of her columns, Strayed proves herself to be an astute amateur psychologist, as well as a compassionate, thoughtful and occasionally tough counselor. As with all personal advice columns, the questions that readers pose to Sugar are at least as intriguing as the answers. Strayed . . . uses her own foibles and misdemeanors to show that ‘we all suffer, we all fail, we all struggle and triumph and struggle again.’” —Cynthia Crossen, The Wall Street Journal  “Strayed has a special talent for glimmering, golden turns of phrase that seem to hold all the promise and hope in the world—they’re Bible verses for a secular audience—but these are not the sort of mottos that you’ll find on, say, motivational posters on Pintrest. . . . Most remarkable has been Strayed’s willingness to use her own story, to revisit her most hopeless, fumbling moments—from drug use to infidelity—in answering readers’ questions. . . . The magic is in these unexpected connections, her ability to make the specific universal. She refers to letter writers as ‘sweet pea’ and ‘honey bun,’ but never lets them off the hook. No matter how tragic their predicament, she exhorts them to be their ‘best, most gigantic self,’ that ‘every last one of us can do better than give up.’ It is tough, smart, real love.” —Tracy Clark-Flory, Salon  “To say that Cheryl Strayed is an Internet advice columnist does not do her justice. Tiny Beautiful Things is a gob-smacking high, a brilliant reinvention of the Miss Lonelyhearts genre. . . . This collection of poignant insights into the complexities of the human heart offers a form of radical empathy and inspired compassion from a fellow traveler—one who not only feels the pain of others but leads them toward light and art.” —Elizabeth Taylor, The Chicago Tribune  “The problem with advice columnists [was that] they were supposed to help you solve your problems, but they didn’t reveal much about their own lives, so it was hard to understand why you should trust them. Cheryl Strayed changed all that with Dear Sugar, a deeply personal advice column that’s earned a devoted following. Beautifully written . . . honest and forthright. . .  poignant and personal, unlike the string of clichés other writers throw at readers. She proves real connection is still possible, even on the Internet, where everyone’s shouting to be heard. She delivers tough love, very gently. There’s a lesson in here for everyone, sweet peas. You just have to find yours. Grade: A” —Melissa Maerz, Entertainment Weekly  “When I was younger, the Dear Ann and Dear Abby columns that ran in newspapers offered a fascinating look at other people's problems. Eventually, though, the advice coming from pseudonymous writers felt distanced and staid, especially compared to the next generation of advisers who staked out the alternative papers and web sites. . . . My current favorite, by far, is “Dear Sugar,” written by Cheryl Strayed. . . . Tiny Beautiful Things collects Strayed’s columns, and it perfectly captures why she has completely won me over. Strayed can be profane, but she offers sympathy, sound advice, gentleness and a surprising amount of confession.” —Vikas Turakhia, Cleveland Plain Dealer  “A good psychoanalyst does two things: she listens, and she dissects. In Tiny Beautiful Things, Strayed does both adeptly. Sugar forces us to swallow sometimes painful realizations about what we want, who we are, and what we therefore must do—or, if not that, the choices we must make. She also lays bare the impossibility of controlling what isn’t ours to control. . . . The honesty is far more comforting than shallow promises would be. Sugar can handle what’s real in us. . . . If she can handle our treacherous secrets without disintegrating, maybe others will accept us in our entirety, too. Maybe we can accept ourselves. . . . Sugar seems to have had more experiences than any human we’ve ever met, like some sort of omniscient goddess. . . . These stories are not written for their own sake, but as a way to explain human complexity. The details of her past theft comes out as a means of empathizing with a writer ashamed of the same. Sugar describes her husband’s infidelity to help a fiancée with a stark, black-and-white view of marriage consider nuance. This is the type of meaning-making any personal essayist or memoirist should aim for, of course—and, notably, Strayed is both—but it’s all the more explicit and obvious in an advice column. Strayed’s story is, in its way, a mirror. One of Strayed’s most vital messages—which her revelations of past lapses are meant to show—is that being a real, whole person means being imperfect. Sugar models this not only in her history, but in her letters, too. Once in a while, she falters. . . . Sugar is good enough, but not perfect. Which is exactly what she’s been trying to tell us all along.” —Jessica Gross, The Millions  “Many of the pieces in Tiny Beautiful Things, which first appeared in the online literary magazine The Rumpus, have had robust first lives, circulated on the Internet by fans. In book form, the letters and Strayed’s responses take on greater meaning as an extended epistolary essay on the human condition—with its antsy spouses, frustrated parents and desperately indebted students—and also as a companion autobiography to Wild. Sugar’s technique is to share the thorniest, most indelible experiences from her life to help each letter writer work through his or her own, which makes Tiny Beautiful Things an odd, contradictory and moving invention: an anecdotal memoir—that most narcissistic of genres—whose every chapter is written lovingly and generously to someone else. . . . Sugar is sharp-witted, but she doesn’t do funny. She doesn’t do snarky. (This distinguishes her from, to state it conservatively, most of the Internet.) And Sugar doesn’t coddle. She especially doesn’t coddle writers. . . . Stillness pervades Strayed’s Dear Sugar columns, which profit from all the advantages of the Internet—its anonymous e-mail forms, endless terrain and capacity for comments and community building—but provide refuge from its white noise. It’s partly because of the emotional content of each letter and response, but also due to the inherent intimacy of the form. Direct address is as old as lyric poetry: it’s just I and you—and the rest of the world gets to listen in.” —Radhika Jones, Time Magazine  “Strayed, in this collection of advice (some previously unpublished) for readers of her ‘Dear Sugar’ column on therumpus.net, chooses thought-provoking questions from her readers and listens deeply to their emotional content. In casually intimate prose and with literary grace, she creates moments of wise, compassionate insight in often startlingly personal miniature memoirs, cradling gentle but practical guidance with enough humor to cement Strayed’s presence as both a mentor and the most understanding of friends. Sugar can be tough and honest, but she’s never mean: in Sugar’s world, we all deserve love unconditionally, but also owe it to ourselves to be the best, most authentic selves we can be. For a regrounding in the beauty of what it means to be flawed and gorgeously human, for answers that feel real, Strayed’s caring essays offer surprisingly rich comfort.”  —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “This beloved Internet advice columnist, using the pseudonym Sugar, revealed herself in early 2012 to be the acclaimed novelist and memoirist Strayed. First appearing on the Rumpus in 2010, her column ‘Dear Sugar’ quickly attracted a large and devoted following with its cut-to-the-quick aphorisms like ‘Write like a motherf*cker’ and ‘Be brave enough to break your own heart.’ This collection gathers up the best of Sugar, whose trademark is deeply felt and frank responses grounded in her own personal experience; in many ways, it is a portrait of Strayed herself. She answers queries on subjects ranging from professional jealousy to leaving a loved partner to coping with the death of a child. VERDICT: Part advice, part personal essay, these pieces grapple with life’s biggest questions. Beautifully written and genuinely wise, this book is full of heartache and love. Highly recommended.” — Molly McArdle, Library Journal (starred review)“Strayed offers insight into the world of online advice through her collection of letters sent to ‘Dear Sugar,’ her once-anonymous column for the online magazine The Rumpus. Sugar’s Golden Rule—‘Trust Yourself’—pushes the author and her readers to embrace themselves and not be afraid of asking life’s complex questions. . . . Strayed’s practical advice mixes with abundant personal anecdotes in which she illustrates to the addressee the reasoning behind her counsel. Admittedly not versed in psychology, her responses are sensitive and comprehensive, and her self-reflection projects understanding and sympathy. . . . The author’s comforting yet stern writing style connects readers to each contributor’s plight and the subsequent response to their cry for help. Appealing to Dear Sugar fans and self-help seekers alike, this ‘collection of intimate exchanges between strangers’ demonstrates that wisdom doesn’t come only from age, but also from learning from the experiences of others. A realistic and poignant compilation of the intricacies of relationships.” —Kirkus Reviews“These pieces are nothing short of dynamite, the kind of remarkable, revelatory storytelling that makes young people want to become writers in the first place. Over here at the Salon offices, we're reading the columns with boxes of tissue and raised fists of solidarity, shaking our heads with awe and amusement.” —Sarah Hepola, Salon “Sugar doesn't coddle her readers—she believes them, and hears the stories inside the story they think they want to tell. She manages astonishing levels of empathy without dissolving into sentiment, and sees problems before the reader can. Sugar doesn't promise to make anyone feel good, only that she understands a question well enough to answer it.” —Sasha Frere-Jones, The New Yorker critic“Powerful and soulful, Tiny Beautiful Things is destined to become a classic of the form, the sort of book readers will carry around in purses and backpacks during difficult times as a token or talisman because of the radiant wisdom and depth within.” —Aimee Bender, author of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake“[Sugar is] turning the advice column on its head.” —Jessica Francis Kane, author of The Report“Sugar’s columns are easily the most beautiful thing I’ve read all year. They should be taught in schools and put on little slips of paper and dropped from airplanes, for all to read.” —Meakin Armstrong, Guernica editor“Dear Sugar will save your soul. I belong to the Church of Sugar.” —Samantha Dunn, author of Failing Paris“Charming, idiosyncratic, luminous, profane. . . . [Sugar] is remaking a genre that has existed, in more or less the same form, since well before Nathanael West’s Miss Lonelyhearts first put a face on the figure in 1933. . . . Her version of tough love ranges from hip-older-sister-loving to governess-stern. Sugar shines out amid the sea of fakeness.” —Ruth Franklin, The New Republic

What’s the experience like? Strayed’s ability to elicit empathy and peace in even some of the darkest of stories is incredibly moving. At many points in the book I came up with a lake of epiphanies, and reinforced some pre-existing ones. I want to share them, but I’ll just lunge the few that made the tuning forks in my mind purr:1. Guilt and shame, while closely inhibited, are very different things.2. Sexual anxiety and jealousy are often guised as extreme monogamy3. The questions you most often don’t want to ask are the ones that most often need answering.4. We control very little. Thoughts, emotions, even logic and reason are unsolicited conditions that are ever changing.5. Beliefs lag behind reality You will laugh. You will cry; definitely cry. Make sure you keep a box of Sham-Wows nearby. Why should I read this? It will make you less of a bug buzzing intolerant poop-stick. It will make you realize your problems are not special. You will, without doubt, come across a letter that sounds like it was written by you, maybe slightly more or less extreme, and you will feel a part of yourself get soul-crushed and healed as you read the very sentences. It will show that you and the people around you are okay. It will bring you closer to the answer of what love is. It will make you question what love is. Wait. How do I apply this to my life? Empathy is the pipeline of trust, connection, and understanding in our relationships. You’ll nurture a greater sense of that with this book.

Cheryl is a fantastic writer and her ability to connect and weave her wisdom and art into helpful words for strangers that transcend her personally is inspiring and is of great comfort, especially to a bibliophile in dire need of some emotionally supportive sugar that may otherwise be lacking. This book breathes true stories, personal memoir, art/poetry, and practical advice that encourages one to think a little differently and a lot more empathetically about our life and all the people in it. I found her shortly after college; a time to feel accomplished (which was true) but tired, broken, and lacking. Let's just say when many fail and harm you - strangers like sugar are present, compassionate and show you that you too can make gold from all of it, even all that horrible badness. Some did not directly apply to me at the time - but the parts that did helped me heal wounds I vehemently denied were even there - merely by showing how we are not all ALL ALONE, as we may often feel. Years later, with more life and goodness/badness - I hear her echoing wisdom again in a different light. It's a book to revisit - it covers, if not all, most aspects of life you have encountered as well as those you did not encounter yet, but might. If you're a proud crier like me, it behooves you to have some pain killers, your favorite blanket and plenty of warm fluids at the ready.

A marvelous book, Tiny Beautiful Things reminded me of the prevalence of human suffering and the part we can play in easing one another's burdens. Based on an advice column, Dear Sugar, it’s filled with letters to Sugar asking for advice on love, heartache, disappointment, and suffering. From cancer to adultery and death to Christmas, Sugar responds with tough, shrewd compassion. She doesn’t candy coat her responses or pull any punches. And yet…and yet, no one who reads them could dispute her genuine concern and compassion for her advice seekers. She calls them “sweet pea,” and signs her letters, “Yours, Sugar.”Cheryl Strayed knows the power of story, and in most of her messages, she includes a story about herself or someone she knows. And the writing is soooo good! In one column, she quotes Italian writer Carlo Levi who said, “The future has an ancient heart,” and while I was pondering what that meant, Strayed wrote, “…that who we become is born of what we most primitively are; that we both know and cannot possibly know what it is we’ve yet to make manifest in our lives.”Every page is filled with sound advice written in a no-nonsense manner that forces the reader sit up and take notice. There’s humor. But mostly there’s support and insight. Of all the chapters, the most heartrending is “The Obliterated Place.” Strayed responds to "Living Dead Dad" in the aforementioned piece with, "I don't know how you go on without your son. I only know that you do. And you have. And you will.Your shattering sorrow light of a letter is proof of that." Read it. Read them all.Advice from Cheryl: Every last one of us can do better than give up.

From 2010-2012 Cheryl Strayed penned a column advice anonymously, known only as Sugar. Tiny Beautiful Things is a compilation of letters written to Sugar and counsel offered back in the form of outstanding literary artistry..“One of the basic principles of every single art form has to do not with what’s there — the music, the words, the movement, the dialogue, the paint — but with what isn’t. In the visual arts, it’s called the ‘negative space’ — the blank parts around and between objects, which is, of course, every bit as crucial as objects themselves.”..What Cheryl Strayed was able to do with unparalleled skill was interpret what was not being said by these advise seekers. She was able to see what they were asking on paper, and dig even deeper into what they didn’t know how to ask. This lyrical collection of letters serves as a reminder that we are not alone in our shame, jealousy, insecurities or disappointment. Strayed offers up hope and a sense of comfort through her radical empathy.

I am not normally a fan of self help or of advice columns, but Cheryl Strayed's Sugar column may change my mind. She has a unique talent for getting under the question and teasing out the complex psychological assumptions that inform the writer's questions. Moreover, she writes her answers as if they were literary essays, brimming with heart-rending narratives and gorgeous language. I hesitated to buy this book because it's so far from my typical genre, but man, am I ever glad I did.

Urban Tantra, Second Edition: Sacred Sex for the Twenty-First Century, by Barbara Carrellas

Review

Praise for the first edition of Urban Tantra: "Urban Tantra is the most pleasurable, fun, meaningful, and liberating book on sex ever! Thank you, Barbara!" --Christiane Northrup "Urban Tantra gives me hope that the world will become a more sexually satisfied, ecstatic, enlightened, and inclusive place." --Annie Sprinkle"This handy how-to promises mind-blowing, toe-curling, highly spiritual sex for humble beginners, BDSM aficionados and everyone in between. Sex educator Carrellas is on a mission to bring Tantra-the ancient practice of sacred sex, in which interpersonal connection and transformative ecstasy are the norm-to the modern world, to reclaim sex from "messed-up, sexually-dysfunctional, judgmental, and ignorant culture," and to shift the urban sex paradigm from recreational activity to a sumptuous, impassioned way of life. Not that one necessarily needs that kind of ambition: Carrellas offers ways to enhance any old sexual encounter (with techniques like breathing, stroking, prodding and piercing), techniques for solo play and countless uses for a trunk full of toys. Same sex, transgender, and multi-partner play is encouraged (if not highly recommended), and the text is peppered with illuminating, try-this-at-home anecdotes. Pictures and diagrams are whimsical but instructive, making Carrellas's cheerful descriptions of unusual concepts-"gigglegasms," "rainbow rubs" and "the mushy puss" among them-easy to grasp. A final chapter, on "Sex Magic," examines the power of Tantra to achieve a number of effects, from backpain relief to a happier office to world peace; however far you'd like to take your sex life, this friendly guide will likely show the way."--Publishers Weekly

This is an essential text for expanding yourself, your interactions, your sensuality, and your spirituality. Very accessibly written, Barbara opens truths that can benefit us all - however you might identify. She comes from a place of love. You can feel her encouragement, and her insights are helpful. Her stories resonate, and some of her early attitudes and experiences have similarities to my own growth - that is reassuring. Love and connection starts with our selves, and her book is very well organized to help us connect with ourselves before starting to improve our interactions with others. If you only ready the first parts of this book, it would be worth the time and money!Particularly helpful are the tools she provides to help communication with your partner(s). I felt like I had a mentor to help me grow.Highly recommended!

I just read all the negative reviews for this book, and I totally understand the fundamental reason behind the unfavorable perspective on this beautiful piece of art, Urban Tantra. It is simply that these people can't see themselves being open to the experience, let go and even picture themselves in such against - society's norms "acts." The way Barbara perceives sex and its aspect of all sexes and genders being able to share the love freely with no attachments and only all the love in the world for each other, could be looked as totally out of this world concept of hippies.I personally love the book and it is changing my life on a really quick pace. She is truly a beautiful woman, who's message to the people does mainly one thing - she's trying to open people's mind to let go of the old ways we perceive sexuality and face it the way it truly is, the way it runs naturally in the depths of our DNA. She tried to help the human psyche let go in the moment, live fully in it. If you are into spirituality, if you familiarize with Buddhism, hinduism, Taoism, and are exploring deeper into the world of love and interconnection of all there is, look no further, because Tantra guides you the way to it through ecstasy, through the vessels of your own body. Barbara is the perfect projectionist/translator of the ancient Asian philosophy to the Western masses of the 21 Century. If you are open minded or are curious in exploring deeper into your psyche and soul through you body. Buy It now!!! I'd pay 100$ for this book. After successfully having the craziest orgasm I've ever had from merely breathing (from the second try ever), I can't stop but rave about this book and the author endlessly. I want everyone to truly experience ecstasy at its best.Thank You Barbara. Can't wait for your workshop in New York in the Winter.

Yes you can read criticism about this book, to be devoted only to sex and nothing else. It is true that it does not have much emphasis on more traditional forms of tantra, which are till today practiced in India,...If you are looking for something like that, I can recommend you a book called: Tantra Unveiled: Seducing the Forces of Matter and Spirit ,has a strong emphasis on traditional forms, goddess, worship, mantras, yantras, yoga,..Anyhow I would say Urban Tantra can teach you a lot about sex, give you tips and ideas how to use your sexual energy,...well tantra, like all other philosophies, religions,...is trying to liberate us, this book might help you with sexual techniques,... it does touches on very important aspects as self acceptance/ worth,..

While racy and experimental, this book is NOT about true Tantra. If your looking to spice up your life, experiment and to become sexually liberated, then this book may help. If you want to know what Tantra really is, try Tantric Transformation by Osho for a jumping off point.

Very straight forward book on Tantra. While adult oriented and western, the author expresses the importance of meditation within sexual energy. So it isn't just about sex, but about Tantra

The author has a breezy writing style, and she includes all couples, not just hetero. Really much more more lighthearted and fun than some other books on the subject, which are Very Very Serious.
