The Introductory section of this 2009 collection of essays explains, “It is now more than ten years since the publication of the first collection of essays under the title ‘Radical Orthodoxy.’ The original series of twelve books has since led to many more publications covering an extremely broad range of subjects, from work to the nature of the university and the craft of reading theologically… The literature which lies beneath the wide umbrella of Radical Orthodoxy is therefore very extensive and there is a large body of works which engages thoroughly with Radical Orthodoxy’s key themes in more or less critical ways. This Reader offers a combination of writings which seek to introduce Radical Orthodoxy alongside some of this sensibility’s signature texts---those which have been most influential, definitive, enduring, and provocative… it is hoped that this volume will provide a convenient quick point of reference for specialists and a guide for students.” (Pg. x)Simon Oliver refers in his essay to “Radical Orthodoxy’s refusal to admit the autonomy of any discourse, including philosophy, from theology… it is NOT the case that Radical Orthodoxy has thereby turned everything into theology under different guises. The refusal of the language of autonomy is instead the refusal of the possibility of indifference to the transcendent. The consequence of this view of the nature of theology is its constant and critical engagement with other disciplines… It is Radical Orthodoxy’s contention… that in its peculiarly modern guise theology has become just another discipline alongside others.” (Pg. 20)Rupert Shortt states [in a conversation with John Milbank, Catherine Pickstock, Graham Ward and others], “Close to the heart of Radical Orthodoxy lies the immodest, but… vital, belief that Christian thought has to give a plausible and self-confident account of the whole world. You are saying that unless theology can evoke a coherent universe in which other things fit, then it becomes a dreary kind of ecclesiastical housekeeping or settles down into what Donald MacKinnon used to call ‘ecclesiological fundamentalism.’ One just talks about the Church. And although Radical Orthodoxy is sometimes thought of as a very Church-dominated or in-house discourse, it could be argued that the opposite is true.” (Pg. 28)He notes some of the criticisms made of Radical Orthodoxy: “The unease… centres on the audacity of painting with so broad a brush… the painstaking engagement with difficult and uncooperative detail can be absent from your canvases… Another perception is that you don’t allow enough for … ‘the sinfulness, the provisionality and the muddle of the Church…’ … In other words, the idea that authority has to defend itself, has to argue, isn’t a bad idea in itself… others are a bit skeptical of the idea that there was just one great theological fall in the Middle Ages…” (Pg. 39)In this conversation, Simon Oliver explains, “the notion of knowledge as illumination is increasingly important for Radical Orthodoxy. Our knowledge is corrigible… because it’s illuminated, but only to a certain degree. So our knowledge is always partial: it’s dimmer or brighter, and in the end it’s always illuminated from a single source. Critically, there’s only one guarantee of truth---only one source of light---which is God’s own knowledge.” (Pg. 43)The Introduction to an essay by John Milbank notes, “Radical Orthodoxy is clearly committed to the view that faith and reason are intimately and always intertwined. There is no ‘dualism’; that is, there is no sense in which there are two orders of knowing standing over and against each other, one based on faith, the other on reason. Of course, there is a tendency to associate ‘faith’ with the discourse of theology, and ‘reason’ with philosophy. As faith and reason are intertwined, so too are theology and philosophy.” (Pg. 65)In a later essay, John Milbank argues, “The Gospels present us with a very confusing and complex account… Given this strange account, the overwhelming response of modern New Testament scholars is to doubt its veracity, to such a degree that little of the Passion narrative is now seen as plausibly historical… I want to suggest a perspective from which the very strangeness of the features I have mentioned may in fact present some warrant of verisimilitude (at the very least). But at the same time this new ground for historical plausibility casts light upon the universal significance of Christ’s death, as claimed by the first Christians.” (Pg. 205)Graham Ward says, “What I am suggesting is that Christian theologians might rethink this figure in terms of Jesus as the Christ---viewing Christology as concerned with trading and understanding the operations of Christ. I make such a proposal on the basis of trying to recover something of the ‘otherness’ of Christ for contemporary Christology. If Christ reveals to us what it is to be human, we cannot simply project our images of being human only the figure of Christ. We have then to wrestle with and deconstruct the language and the categories we use to speak about this incarnate one… There might then be theological value in examining further this schizo Christ who produces, through his unique operations, the deterritorialized Church---which, if not exactly a body without organs, might… be understood as a body in which the differences between organs are only epiphenomenal… A schizo Christology, already announcing a theological anthropology, would lead then to a schizo ecclesiology: a true ‘socias.’ But that is another essay.” (Pg. 250-251)Catherine Pickstock points out, “So, by stressing the ecclesial and relational context of the Eucharist, and its character as linguistic and signatory ACTION rather than extra-linguistic presence, one can start to overcome the logic of the secular Derridean sign. But in doing so, one finds that one has---almost by default---defended an account of transubstantiation. For it is when the Eucharist is hypostasized as wither a thing or a sign in separation from ecclesial and ecstatic action that it becomes truly decadent.” (Pg. 270)John Milbank notes, “So, if today there is a problem of the recrudescence of intolerant religion, this is not a problem that liberalism can resolve, but rather a problem that liberalism tends to engender. We cannot oppose it in the name of liberal human rights, because this notion also revolves in a futile circle: these rights are supposedly natural, yet inert uncreated nature has never heard of them. They only exist when the State proclaims them, yet the State alone cannot legitimate them, else they cease to be natural and so general and objective.” (Pg. 356)Milbank explains in his Afterword, “Radical Orthodoxy sees its task of philosophical/theological synthesis as taking forwards the Renaissance/Romantic rethinking of authentic Christian tradition. This is one aspect of the ‘radicalism’ of its orthodoxy… Radical Orthodoxy seeks to integrate into a metaphysically realist perspective a greater attention to 1. Sign, 2. Aspect and 3, Number. In the first case it regards the linguistic turn as fundamentally correct, but does not read this in a quasi-transcentalist way… The Radical Orthodoxy critique of the secular… postmodern is, in essence, that it sometimes obfuscates the metaphysically optional character of its nihilistic vision, presenting it as the ineluctable outcome of theoretical rigor.” (Pg. 388) Later, he adds, “just what is it that makes Radical Orthodoxy radical? The answer is that… the combination works in paradoxically different ways. On the one hand, what is meant is the radicalism of orthodoxy as such… In this sense a ‘radical’ orthodoxy means a militant orthodoxy in the sense of a proper integrity… However, ‘radical orthodoxy’ ALSO implies a radicalization of orthodoxy.” (Pg. 393)This book is the most useful “overview” of this new theological trend that I have yet found. Other helpful books are Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology and Introducing Radical Orthodoxy: Mapping a Post-secular Theology.

John Milbank catalyzed a robust theological movement, though he would bemoan the label, when in 1990 he published his groundbreaking monograph Theology and Social Theory. It began with these oft-quoted words:Once, there was no 'secular'. And the secular was not latent, waiting to fill more space with the steam of the 'purely human', when the pressure of the sacred was relaxed... The secular as a domain had to be instituted or imagined, both in theory and in practice.In many ways, the rest of the Radical Orthodox project, if I'm permitted to speak of its widely variant aims as governed by a singular purpose, is to challenge the viability of this "invented secular", and its birth-mother, Modernity.It is this common opposition to Modernity (and its enabler, late-medieval scholasticism) that finds Radical Orthodoxy appealing so often to the Continent for support. For whatever reservations historic, orthodox Christianity may have with the likes of Derrida, and certainly there are reservations, they do not preclude his value as a critic of Modernity. Lest one forget, Descartes, Locke, and Kant are not the Fathers of the Church. Our lineage is pre-Modern. To be in bed with the Enlightenment is to forsake our heritage - to heap abuse on the tradition - nay, the Church - that made us possible. Thus, we are able, according to the claims of Radical Orthodoxy, to find allies, even if highly qualified, in the philosophical movement known as postmodernism.Yet this turn toward the Continent, as suggested above, is primarily a move to enable one of Radical Orthodoxy's deeper intentions. Namely, ressourcement. "The renewed reading of the depths of the Christian tradition in order to inform a rigorous, critical and authentically theological reading of our own times" (xi). Thus, we find folks like Milbank offering close readings of Augustine, while Catherine Pickstock reappropriates Plato, and together they plumb Aquinas for a promising configuration of faith and reason. In this way they are very similar to the nouvelle theologians, who in the early 20th century sought ecclesial renewal through creative rereadings of Christendom's most prized texts. Actually, this connection to the nouvelle movement is no doubt conscious, as Hans Urs von Balthasar and Henri de Lubac are frequently referenced in their works.This volume, The Radical Orthodoxy Reader, is impressive for its near-comprehensive scope. It consists of twelve excerpts (some quite lengthy) drawn from the primary texts of the Radical Orthodoxy movement. These portions are in turn divided into six parts, each with an illuminating introduction from the editors. And serving as bookends to the collection, Simon Oliver has a very clear, accessible Introduction - one I would highly recommend to first time readers - and John Milbank offers a weighty Afterword, reflecting on the first decade since the publication of Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology (the formal beginning of the movement).The collection is effective in offering a strong feel for the kind of work the Radical Orthodox theologians are doing. For example, readers will be impressed quite quickly by the political implications entailed in their work. Because of the straight line that Milbank draws from the erring theology of John Duns Scotus to the invention of the secular, for Radical Orthodoxy, a recovery of proper Christian theology signals the necessary rejection of secularism. And if their theology precludes the political liberalism of Modernity, then something constructive must be offered in its place and, certainly, that is no small task. Thus, we have Radical Orthodox theology's commitment to robust exercises in political theology, or perhaps, theological politics.My primary concern with Radical Orthodoxy, again, if I'm permitted to speak of it as a whole, is that its conscious rejection of secularism/Modernity, will be a more determinative factor in their theological reasoning then commitment to the Christian tradition. In other words, I fear that their commitment to the "Radical" may overshadow their pledge to "Orthodoxy". Fortunately, this concern is only potential, it is not proven in any of the writings included here, or that I know of in the larger corpus. However, at the least, it seems a temptation that must be guarded against.Nonetheless, Radical Orthodoxy is a vibrant, sophisticated movement in Western theology that ought to be celebrated even while critically engaged. I trust it will continue to advance in the coming years. The real question will be whether it remains hidden in the shadows of university halls or takes its needed place within concrete, local churches. As long as Radical Orthodoxy remains a nearly inaccessible academic conversation, the Church will continue to imbibe the secularizing tendencies of Modernity. HUGE selection of recipes sure to fit anyone's tastes, but no photos!!!! Photos offer such an inspiration to make a dish, and I miss those so much!!! I would've paid more for the book had they included those. Maybe they were trying to keep the costs down. If so, I can respect that, for sure. It's a very thick book and if you don't need photos, there's a ton here. If you need photos, you might be disappointed.

My wife and I ordered this cookbook as soon as I was released from the hospital. I had had a heart attack at age 58, and healthier eating--low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-sodium, smaller portions--was on the menu. It has now been more than six weeks, and we have eaten about 90 percent of our meals from this book. People ask me, "what do you miss most?" and I have nothing to say. The recipes have yielded such tasty meals that I truly never think about the fact that I'm not getting the salt or fat I was so used to.I recommend this book to anyone who needs or wants to eat healthy food. My wife did not have a heart attack, but she has chosen to eat exactly what I eat (and is losing weight, as I am, because of it) and is enjoying the food every bit as much as I am.Get this cookbook as soon as you can.

This has been a GREAT help.It's for my mom but everyone in my household has come down with something where we need a variation of this diet! I needed a diabetic diet and this meets our needs very well.What i didn't expect was this book doesn't treat you as if you already know how to do certain types of cooking. Online tutorials have not been kind to this newlywed. I've learned so much on top of getting to eat healthier! We've even trimmed down a bit thanks to recipes for homemade broths and seasoning mixes and various other staples for cooking in this book. (Try the taco recipes if you get this, my family loves how flavorful they came out.)Combine this book with a transition from store bought seasoning mixes with more than 100mg of sodium (not % but MG!! If you're also on a "under 1500mg of sodium" limit as well) and canned veggies to frozen and you're well on you're way to better health! (Purely my opinion as my body struggles with preservatives in canned products. I know not everyone can afford dropping cans from their lives. Even We don't buy fresh. I could go into detail but I'm reviewing the book not my life lol)Definitely something to look into, even if you don't have cardiac or diabetic issues!

Until I got this cookbook.I am only 31 years old. And after giving birth to my daughter 7 months ago (and a horrible 12 day hospital stay), I was told I had heart failure (cardiomyopathy). It was devastating. Then once I learned what eating too much sodium really does to me and causes breathing problems, I knew I really had to stick to my Doctor's orders of consuming no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day.I never thought I ate much sodium. I was the kind of person who rarley salted my food, I didn't eat fast food, I tried to get natural or organic ingredients, I even had unsalted butter at home. No one realizes that sodium is in EVERYTHING once you really look at it. So when you're faced with having to restrict your intake, it's daunting and depressing. I cried so many times thinking I'd never get to eat at a restaurant ever again. I'd never have good tasting food again.First I ordered the No-Salt cookbook. Hated it. Most bland food I've ever had.Then I tried this. Oh my god, it allows me to eat CHEESE and BACON! (Wisconsin girl here) I am telling you, you will not think you are eating low sodium meals with this cook book. Not only are the recipes low sodium, but low fat too. They really know how to bring out flavors without salt. My husband cooks recipes from this book every night for me, and even he likes it. I've only had a couple recipes so far that I didn't care for much. This is a winner!Also, look up the AHA Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook.

I ordered this book for two reasons one my best friend has to be on a heart healthy diet, and on my dad's side of the family has a lot of heart problems do I wanted to stop from getting one.... I did rent heart healthy cook books from the library, but 90% of them had pork ham bacon and sausage recipes and I can't eat these because I'm allergic to them, but this book isn't like that it's filled with stuff I can eat. I haven't cooked out of it yet, but my best friends daughter has a diet doctor who says this book is promising.

This cookbook looks fabulous! My sister is using it and mentioned several good recipes. My husband recently had a heart attack. He is recovering nicely, but I am trying to learn a new way of cooking. The only drawback (and it isn't really a bad point) is that it is so huge that I am a little overwhelmed!

This is a good place to start on the quest to prepare heart healthy meals. There are a wide variety of recipes to keep things from getting boring, and detailed nutritional information is listed for each one. Some of the recipes go a little heavy on the carbohydrates (rice, etc), but those are easily adjusted by switching out the offending ingredient for something else like spinach, other veggies, etc. I only mention this because our cardiologist emphasized low carbohydrate in general, not just the white flour/sugar type--other physicians' recommendations might not include that particular caveat.

Richardson is former Clinical Director of the North Shore Counseling Center, pastoral counselor, author of many books on family systems theory and is currently a retired pastor living in West Vancouver, BC, Canada. Note: this review also covers Creating a Healthier Pastor, a companion volume.In Creating a Healthier Church, the reviewer was impressed with the early clarification to apply the book to oneself (as pastor or leader), not others, for maximum benefit (21). This was part of the book's goal in applying family systems theory, to reflect on one's own role in church, how past challenges have been handled, and how this might be improved. Inevitably, this would contribute to the secondary goal, which was a healthier church that would support the growth and healing of its members so they could better do their mission in the world. Throughout, Richardson maintained a clear focus on the target of both recognizing and improving one's own role and interaction with one's congregants, and not "fixing" others' problems, or fixating on "problem people."The writer appreciated the author's ongoing, consistent references to Scripture and biblical examples and images, such as Paul's own balancing of individuality with togetherness in 1 Cor. 9-13 (62), which Richardson also humorously illustrated with the image of porcupines trying to keep each other warm (66). The clear biblical grounding greatly helped the book's applicability to those who take issue with counselors who try to "secularize" Christianity with "human psychology." Emotional maturity itself, for example, clearly is an example of biblical wisdom (80), which the author states is the basic requirement for all God's leaders (86). Another helpful metaphor used throughout was that of a mobile representing a congregation (of which the pastor is a part), the whole of which is affected by movement of a part, and also equally affected by calming of a part. This helped the reviewer grasp many of the new terms of family systems theory, such as reactivity and distancing, and connectedness balanced with separateness.The only weakness the reviewer saw was an analysis of birth order and resulting generalizations (144-157), which sounded more like horoscope reading than useful principles. Much more space would be needed to quote the vast preponderance of inspiring, instructional, and helpful elements, for example, "calmer churches usually have calmer leaders" (173).In Becoming a Healthier Pastor, the reviewer was impressed by the enthusiastic endorsement of the editor, one of the author's former professors, "I am struck by the amount I can learn from a former student" (v). Like the earlier volume, the central theme was using family systems theory to develop emotional maturity, but more specifically for pastors to attain a "higher, healthier level of functioning" (viii). This comes about through extensive research into the pastor's family of origin as having established his or her deep and overriding patterns of emotional functioning (ibid.). As an active proponent of systems theory, Richardson points out that the model uniquely encompasses all aspects of ministry and human function (3). While the reviewer is a counseling novice, the point was persuasive, and took note that the author practices only this model of therapy.With that said, however, and unlike the earlier, more general volume, several things in this work triggered caution flags for the reviewer. All the general Bowens' theory material as applied to pastors and ministry work seemed quite applicable and apropos, such as "all of us exist on a continuum of emotional reactivity" (20), which creates various levels of differentiation, which then manifests in the acting out of anxious patterns. All this and much more is well and good, and both helpful and informative, such as "The main way to increase involvement and commitment in the church is for pastors to be a safe, less anxious presence" (33). The reviewer thought, however, that Richardson attributed too much formative shaping to one's family of origin and not enough to other equally influential (sometimes more so) childhood arenas such as school, neighborhoods, extracurricular activities, and church. Reinforcing this view, his statement, "Nearly every sort of problematic behavior is most likely a form of reactivity to family" (72) seems to the reviewer to be overly attributed.The author strongly recommends for pastors to revisit parents and relatives multiple times, yet many cannot because of time, financial hardship, sickness, or death--often, both parents die while one is relatively young. He briefly mentions this possibility, but then suggests pursuing the research with other family members, or former friends and co-workers of one's parents. Such an exercise seems both unproductive and highly impractical. What would seem more useful and practical would be to focus on more readily available friends and acquaintances with similar personality traits that trigger similar reactivity. The author seems to have either unlimited funds or his family remained in close proximity, and seems unaware that most families are widely dispersed, and most pastors cannot afford extensive traveling. A final negative was his virtual dismissal of the entire subject of forgiveness (145), as if immersion in family systems theory absorbs and replaces such obsolete ways of dealing with issues.A strong positive was Richardson's illustration of the pastor as a coach, and all the many relevant parallels inherent in the concept. Another positive was the way he repeats and clarifies frequently for maximum comprehension. He has a knack for capturing the essence of issues, such as this on avoiding triangles, "The best way to be on their side is to be on everyone's side" (139). Overall, the author met his goals, and the reviewer is genuinely intrigued to further explore family systems theory.

I love this book and have bought about 6 to give away. Richardson does a great job telling his story and connecting to Family Systems theory. I think the word "pastor" could limit the audience but this book is for everyone who wants to understand how their family, and their reactions to their family, affect them. His story helps explain cut-offs and triangles in families. I'm not always a fan of non-fiction because I get bogged down but Richardson tells his own story and I couldn't put the book down. He keeps it simple and uncomplicated and yet captivating. I highly recommend this for anyone seeking help with family relationships.

I bought this for a grad school class and actually loved the book. For those interested in Family Systems Theory or who are interested in exploring their relationship with their family of origin, this book is for you! The book gives recommendations for finding a Family Systems Theory counselor as well, so if you are very interested in undertaking that feat, the book does have resources for you to do so.

An excellent, insightful book. Richardson clearly knows his stuff. He applies family systems theory to the work of the pastor and, contrary to conventional wisdom, says that the pastor's ability to be a healthy leader hinges on whether he/she has done the necessary work of being healthy in his/her own family. The book is full of helpful examples that are hard-hitting and realistic.

Don't buy this book unless you're willing and able to return to your family of origin and spend significant time working through your issues there. Half of the book is devoted to doing that work, so if you're looking for something to help you understand family systems theory on your own, this isn't for you.

This book was required for a class I'm taking, but I'm recommending it to everyone I know who is involved in church leadership. It also has excellent information for dealing with your own family system. It's very readable, so would be excellent for a church board, committee, or small group to work through.

So very pleased I purchased this valuable resource as it addreses the interesting issue of our changing congregation face, what people are needing, how to keep a Pastor healthy through creative pastoral care and counselling programmes being implemented etc

Had to read it for a class. It's okay but he could have covered the information in way less time.

Salem Hyde is a new character on the young reader scene, and this book has wonderful characters, a fun, dramatic problem and a great lesson to be learned. The interactions between Salem and his new "counsel" are hilarious. My kids really enjoyed reading this book, right after I finished it myself!

We love reading this as a family. My kinder and 4th grade sons are always entertained.

Salem is a witch and she needs help with spelling and spell casting she entered a spelling bee she thought it was a spell casting contest she found out it was spelling and she couldn't back out she cast a spell that made misspelled words appear in the real life form she hurried to fix her mistakes with glue before the principal saw and she did

Very enjoyable. It's not often you see a graphic novel that's so focused on situational humor, but here it is. Will look for more "Salem Hyde" books in the series.

Very fun (and very clever!) graphic novel for kids who are chapter book-aged, but love things to be a bit more visual.

It's funny, and punny, I think I liked it better than the recipient did. I'm still reading it (it was a Christmas present for someone in the same household).

frank cammuso always has wonderful characters and salem hyde is one! perfect fun with the 2 'pals', read right away by our daughter and wanting the next coming spring!

this is a fantiastic book! after reading castanedas work and being profoundly affected by the tools/knowledge he shared with the wrold. i felt there needed to be a kind of dictionary to the terms and techniques of these books...I had no idea there was one till I found this book in hastings, portland oregon. I looked through the book and didn'r buy it..but lter that day I regretted not picking it up..thanks amazon!for anyone who feels that what castaneda shared is useful and indeed powerfull, this book is a very well put together reference guide!
