For those of you who have already read travel guide books but want a more in depth account of the culture and customs of Ecuador, then this book is for you. This book is unique because in addition to the typical useful facts about climate, political upheaval, the height of volcanoes, and the possibility of dying from myriad tropical diseases, it explores topics pertaining to social class. The author includes a section on women's issues, (yes, prostitution) machismo, immigration, and how indigenous groups fit into the fabric of society. As a result of reading Crowder's book, I have less of an excuse for making a cultural faux pas when interacting with Ecuadorians. For example, the chapter on etiquette, humor, personal space, bribery, and the importance of diplomacy, provide valuable insight into their culture. And did I say bribery? The detailed description of the Ecuadorian diet is appreciated although I think I will skip the consumption of roasted guinea pig and just witness its use in religious rituals.Although one can certainly read selected chapters in any desired order, I enjoyed and benefited from reading the book in its entirety. For those readers who are already proficient Spanish speakers, the chapter about language includes some unusual information about regional accents, slang, titles and nicknames, and how one is judged in Ecuadorian society by one's choice of vocabulary. The glossary containing specific colloquialisms is a real gem and is a welcome addition to the usual list of basic Spanish vocabulary found in most books.

The following is a review of the 2009, 3rd edition:A VERY GOOD overview of things Ecuadorian by an author who has had significant contact with Ecuador since the early 1980s. Having read a number of similar books regarding other countries, this is one of the best. While a number of earlier reviews have criticized the book for emphasizing Quito and Guayaquil, I did not find such to detract at all from the book. "City details" do, most often, pertain to Quito and Guayaquil but those ARE the two largest cities in Ecuador, and likely the two cities with which the author has had the most contact. Despite this, the vast majority of the book's pages, however, provide a wealth of information on all kinds of other things "Ecuadorian".The two reviews accusing the author of "womanizing" or being "sexist", are simply unfair, given the context, and focus on virtually insignificant portions of the book.As if the book itself was not sufficient, the author provides, towards the end, 14 pages listing hundreds of "additional resources" on various subjects and an additional 8 pages of "Further Reading", listing dozens of books and websites. For anyone thinking about living in Ecuador, this is a very good introduction and definitely a worthwhile addition to one's stockpile of knowledge.NOTE: To find the MAIN page of the 2009, 3rd edition, on Amazon, and used copies of such for sale, you have to either (a) search for ISBN 9780761456643, or (b) from the 2007 edition main page, click "See all 3 formats and editions", then expand the "Paperback" list, then click the 2009 edition. The main page for the 2009 edition does not show up in the results list if doing a title+author search.

Great book if you are thinking about moving to Ecuador -- especially if it helps you avoid a move overseas that may not be right for you. This book definitely provides the details of the good, the bad, and the ugly side of living in Ecuador.

This is not a tourist guide of hotels and restaurants ... it is a book that carefully outlines and discusses cultural differences and some of the reasons why they exist the way they do. Whether it's historical, religious, political, contemporary, or rooted in their own peculiar geography, one peels away layer after layer of interesting and useful information. This is an excellent book for the traveler, for the new resident of Ecuador, or for tourists who want to do more than listen to English-speaking tourguides.

I've read many of the internet articles that glamorize Ecuador and make it seem like paradise. This book focuses thing with a lot more clarity. It covers graft, history, and other details that the internet articles neglect to mention. It also has local customs to help you from inadvertently offending some one with a seemingly innocent comment or gesture. It contains a lot of eye opening information that makes it a good read. I'll probably still venture to Ecuador but now I'll do so feeling more aware of what lies ahead.

If you want lots of details on life and attractions in Guayaquil and Quito, this is your book. Cursory treatment of anything outside these two largest metropolitan areas Not quite what I was looking for. Crowder does however have many interesting audio interviews with authors and experts that are available online. Search latin america traveler dot com.

Great book to learn about Ecuador. I'm very glad I purchased this book (and read it) before going to Ecuador.

This was a great book to read before my one month vacation in Ecuador. By reading this book, I got to learn a lot about the culture and the way of life before stepping foot in Ecuador. I stayed mainly in Guayaquil, but was able to visit Playas and Quito. A must-read if you go to Ecuador!! I highly recommend!
