I'll admit that I am often too lazy or too busy to post reviews, but I just had to submit a review for this book because it is absolutely extraordinary. I've read several books on this topic. Most of them fall into one of four categories: they are not relevant to my situation, they are too difficult to understand, they are too simplistic, or there is not enough information on how to heal. This book is, without a doubt, **the best** book I have EVER read on this topic. It is extremely thorough and includes a boatload of exercises to help you move past the effects of emotional abuse and neglect. Finally, I am able to describe the abuse I experience and put a name to it. Most importantly, I feel validated that it wasn't my fault. I highly recommend the digital version so you can sit back and listen. The narrator is very easy to listen to. I have listened to this book at least 4 times and each time I get something more out of it. I have only completed about 20% of the exercises, however. I recommend taking them slow so you can process them. The ONLY criticism I can think of is that a few exercises are a bit hokey, but the vast majority are very creative and useful. I was am so moved by this book that I intend to write to the author. (She gives her email address at the end.)

This was one of those few books that I can say truly changed my life.I thought I had successfully dealt with the emotional baggage from my abusive childhood but apparently I didn't. This book was so good I tracked Beverly down and hired her as my therapist.I'm happier than I've ever been in my life and have stopped the self-sabotage that has dogged me for the past several years.

I've been working with this book for 4 months with time to think passages over and to do exercises offered by the author. She insists you do them and you really should. Being aware of the problems enumerated in the book is only a half of success, you should do something with them. If you need some serious healing, the book will not replace a good therapist, but if you just need more awareness or a starting point, this book is great. It is covering all possible troubles caused by your childhood. Sometimes you'll find yourself reading things not related directly to you, since we all had different stories, but just read them fast and then slow down again when something is relevant for you. I highly recommend this book as a profound overview and starting help for anyone suffering from low self-esteem, unhealthy perfectionism and self-sabotage.

I had just finished reading this wonderful book on improving self-esteem just a few days ago and now I feel more confident than ever and determined to overcome the demons that have plagued my self-esteem since childhood and adolescence. Beverly writes with such empathetic clarity that as you read this book, you can somewhat imagine her presence beside you, helping and guiding you to conquer the painful memories of your childhood/adolescent past and eventually live a fulfilling life with a renewed spirit and newfound confidence. There are powerful writing and self-affirmation exercises at the end of each chapter which are effective tools in motivating you to reach that ultimate goal: raising your self-esteem and increasing your emotional intelligence, free of harsh self-criticism and full of loving self-respect. I highly recommend reading this extraordinary book. You won't be disappointed!!

I think this is an amazing book. To me it's one of those books that has the power to change one's life if picked up at the right time during a process of personal growth. I really liked that Beverly Engel herself experienced and deals with her own past traumas; to me it gave a feeling of solid, genuine insight and credence to everything she writes. Overall, it's not a book that skirts around issues in a light manner, nor is it too complicated. Well worth the read and with techniques and information that can have lasting, positive effects. And it's definitely one you can read again and again when you need it.The one thing I noted however, is that had I not as well been seeing a therapist at the time, I am not sure I would have gotten the most out of this book. I read it between sessions as an accompaniment to my therapy work. That would be the only pitfall I can imagine to those who may need professional help, but are only looking to a book for answers. That said, it is still a powerful resource for people healing from the pain of emotional abuse and neglect, so I'm giving it give stars.

Prepare to take a very in depth look, a bit repeatitive and yet helpfull, at least to me yet it reflected others and why they have the issues they do. so it's good not just for yourself but others you know well, especially things that went on in their childhood. A bit draining still very worth the read.

There is some good information here, but I wish it was not quite so clinical. Though I have a background in clinical work, I prefer reading a more down to earth style. I did get some new information from this book, but I would only recommended it to persons who are very formal, work in the field of mental health, or enjoy a more clinical perspective.
